It's not as simple as that. The vice Chancellor of Lagos was not even consulted about the name change. He just heard it on air like everyone else.

The Unilag VC said he did not support the name change that the University of Lagos already had a very strong brand name and he would prefer it is kept as it is.

This wasn't a tribal or political issue. It was changing of the Unilag name to the name of a Yoruba man, and not Igbo or Fulani.

The modus operandi should have been better done and all stakeholders should have been carried along. Maybe if that happened, perhaps the name change would have been successful. The carrying everyone was the missing aspect.

I love your response though I know it is flawed in the sense that there is no proof that the locals , host communities and the students were involved this decision, it is as political as Unilag was then and the shout down was from the well of disdain they have for the ijo man , as in who is this one , labeling his wife shippotamus , Jesus thats crazy and this guy took it , call tinubu’s wife Amy name and see what will happen to u , Nigeria self proclaimed superior tribe is the issue

I personally don’t see nothing wrong in immortalizing someone like Gowon but I think we should also try to not elevate individuals above some important names and landmarks such as towns, Cities etc. Abuja, Lagos, Portharcourt, Ibadan etc should have higher institutions associated with them.

If the UK was Nigeria, I’m not sure we would still have names like University of Oxford, Cambridge, London, Leeds, Birmingham, Aberdeen etc. They would have since been renamed to things like Winston Churchill University, King Charles University and so on.

I think all these madness started after the renaming of University of Zaria to Ahmadu Bello University as a way of immortalizing the late Sarduana, then Nigerian politicians and leaders in the typical African mentality and ways of doing things, believe that renaming higher institutions after individuals is more important than keeping the names of the towns or Cities where these institutions are domiciled. For me that is not right.

that has always rendered Nigerian universities as a second fiddle in the comity of great and most viable universities in the world

the last time i checked the record...no Nigerian University appeared within the top bracket level of best 200 in the world

Odumegwu Ojukwu university was built by Anambra state govt from scratch and named after him. It was not an old university that the govt suddenly woke up and renamed.

Reason I love Tinubu thinking. Best way is to appreciate anyone while alive for him or her to know how his value is being recognised while alive. Dead has no value.

Awolowo and the rest never know that roads and schools were named after them, that too bad.
