You make a very good level headed point but my answer to this is Yakubu Gowon was a former head of state so he’s worthy of it(dead or alive) also in the long run everything will normalize and everyone will be alright.(I remember when ANSU was renamed after ojukwu I felt the same but it grew on me with time) Nonetheless, some very few people up there also made some good points.

MKO, what was I thinking? I mailed the highest office on Facebook then -
I proposed June 12 as a National Holiday instead. That has been achieved!

But if the majority of Nigerians do want Unilag renamed after MKO Abiola or the-power-that-be want it, we had better have it done with. It would cement the little part I took in it in my memory forever: I used the instrumentality of my GCE/WAEC's English to roundly criticize General Abacha, delved into the Saro-wiwa killing by asking for the emancipation of the Niger-Delta (a little known term at the time). Few weeks after General Abacha was no more. I was just an angry boy. What the hell was I thinking?

Thank God we have democracy today.

If the renaming eventually stands then we will live with it and it will all normalize in time. But im still of the opinion that some federal universities should still bear the federal/state name.
There was lots of politics and tribal games at play which is why renaming of unilag didn’t stand.
MKO Abiola was originally from Abeokuta so a university in ogun state should be named after him if the powers-that-be still want that.

You don't say that to a living soul, there is no assurance Gowon will die before the end of Tinubu tenure. Doing so while he is alive can give him unending happiness and subsequently prolong his days on earth.

On whether he merited it or not, Gowon being the father of Nigeria unity by bringing back secessionists into Nigeria, he deserve to have a University named after him at Federal capital territory.

Well, I don't think it's a question of the state he had come from.

His agitation for the validation of his mandate led to the domino effect of the democracy in Nigeria today, such that no one in uniform has dared to challenge.

He mandate was given to him by Nigerians, not his home state alone and I do think in some hard-to-explain-way MKO Polytechnic is beneath his status.

It was the young students of Unilag (most of who were babies or NOT even born in the 1990s) that took to the streets of Lagos while STRONGLY rejecting the renaming of that institution to Moshood Abiola University of Lagos calling University of Lagos a brand and then a section of the University of Lagos Alumni that rejected the new name. It had absolutely NOTHING to do with APC members in Lagos State although some alumni members may have been politicians at the time.

I was shocked hearing one of the students who is a Yoruba guy called Dapo who spoke with an impeccable British accent and lived in the UK telling one of the news reporters who interviewed him that "We don't know him" and that stunned me because MKO Abiola being the top business mogul in Nigeria as of the 1980s and 1990s, donated millions to Unilag for the series of building constructions on campus. The mogul had fought for democracy and lost his life in the process in 1997.

Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja (just like Moshood Abiola University, Lagos) isn't a bad name as it's a Federal University or Federal property and can be renamed to any good brand name by the visitor as long as the quality of education remains.

Lastly for the younger ones who don't know, General Yakubu Gowon's administration aside from unifying Nigeria after the Nigerian Civil War ended (after exactly 2 years and 6 months) in January 1970, and ensuring redevelopments during the oil boom), was the one that STARTED the plans to move the administrative capital of Nigeria from Lagos Island (Lagos State was NOT the administrative capital BUT Lagos Island) because Lagos Island (Eko Island) had no more room for expansion so, a new central location or FCT was planned from the early 1970s BUT Ibrahim Babangida FINALLY relocated from Lagos Island to Abuja in 1991.
