Awka—Non-indigenes residing in Anambra State have raised concerns over escalating insecurity, declaring 15 out of the state’s 21 local government areas (LGAs) as unsafe.

Speaking through their chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Sani, and secretary, Chief Adebayo Adewusi, the group called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas.

They expressed particular worry about the deteriorating security situation in Onitsha, once considered relatively safe, which has recently come under attack by kidnappers and other criminals.

The group highlighted the alarming situation where even prominent individuals are targeted. For instance, the retired Anglican Archbishop of Nnewi Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Godwin Okpala, abducted in Ezinifite, Aguata LGA, has remained in captivity for almost a week.

The group identified several “no-go” areas across different LGAs:

Orumba Area: Ogbunka, Umunze, Ajali.

Aguata LGA: Ezinifite, Uga, Umuchu.

Ogbaru LGA: Ogbe-Ukwu near Iyiowa, Okoti, Ogwuaniocha, Ossomalla, Atani.

Ihiala LGA: Ihiala town, Mbosi, Azia, Uli, Amorka, parts of Okija.

Nnewi South LGA: Ukpor, Osumenyi, and surrounding areas.

Awka North LGA: Achalla, Mgbakwu, and nearby communities.

Awka South LGA: Noted for thriving cult activities.

Oyi LGA: Nsugbe, Nkwelle, and nearby communities.

Onitsha North and South LGAs: Fegge, Odoakpu, 3-3.

Idemili North and South LGAs: Abatete, Nkpor, Ogidi, Obosi, Oba, Ojoto.

Ekwusigo LGA: Ozubulu, Oraifite.

The group urged the state government to create joint security teams comprising the Armed Forces, Police, Civil Defence, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG).

“These agencies can eliminate the criminals if adequately equipped and motivated with insurance coverage and logistical support,” the group stated.

They further emphasized the urgency of addressing the insecurity before the festive season, noting that “if the governor wants Anambra people to return and enjoy Christmas, action must be taken immediately.”

The call for proactive measures underscores the rising tensions in the state, as residents fear for their safety and demand decisive action to restore peace and security.
