Left behind by who? Northerners have the highest share of the Nigerian presidency. If you feel your region is left behind, discuss the issue with your northern brothers.

Blame Buhari who wasted Nigeria's 8 years 'fighting corruption'.

The North can actually feed the world not just Nigeria, am yet to understand why they will choose Insurgency over mechanized agriculture.

It's high time the Northern Elites decide the kind of Islam that will befit there style of governance and stop sponsoring Boko Haram terrorists who had further dragged their region backward.
The North should emulate countries like Saudi Arabia ,UAE ,Oman,Qatar etc these countries allow education, technological innovations and inventions and above all religious tolerance in there domain but that's not the case in the North,if they are really sincere they should end terrorism in the North once and for all.

He's hypocrite, he's nothing but political king. Have you forgot he married a teenage girl couple of years ago? Check Google for his part in a riot in Kano in 80s.
How well does he directly talk/preach to the common man on the streets

If the North decides to embrace education they would be unstoppable..their population is massive but something is telling me most of their ruling class won't allow it.

It was his lamentations that got him deposed. He has started again. Nobody in the north is lamenting about underdevelopment. I lived there before. Common street names and house numbers, they could not do. All you have was angwan nonsense. Haba, do they need federal government to do that. Abeg, let them eat their Quran and banditry.grin

TheSPEAKER:
They left themselves behind!!!
1000% correct. By stubbornly insisting on not doing the right thing and deliberately opting to remain archaic, the North is the principal architect of her own problems.

How, for example, does the North wish to develop and catch up with others by retaining the almajiri system that no successful model of can be found anywhere today?

Who should be held accountable?

Buhari spent Eight years in government and filled virtually ALL government MDAs with Northerners, likewise security chiefs. So calm down on lamentations.

The North's case is probably far better than most of the South at the moment especially in the area of infrastructural development.

Many Southern States don't have motorable interstate roads due to abandonment by the Buhari's administration over a period of eight years! Unemployment at all time high also.

Equitable attention should be placed on all regions, not just a part of the Country.

RealGandalf:
Sanusi II understands the causative factors of underdevelopment in the north.

1. Religious intolerance: The Muslims and Christians in the north don't really cohabit well enough. The Christians are always scared because of constant persecution; hence, they built walls around themselves and went back into their shells.

A good example was the killing and burning of late Deborah for typing "Holyghost fire" in her school's WhatsApp group. They misinterpreted it, asked her to apologize and when she refused, they pounced on her, hit her with iron rods, sticks, and all, and eventually burnt her to death.

Till this day, no justice has been served. This and many other reasons why the Christians stay on their lanes.

Solution: There's urgent need to resentize all Muslim youth and even elders in the North that Christians are never their enemies. Constant attacks and aggression against Christians and people of other faiths will drive away investors. They should sound the alarm all through the mosques, villages and streets.

2. Education: Too many muslim brilliant minds are wasting away in the north because many believe that secular education is a Christian invention, and therefore, they don't have any need for it. This ideology was part of the reason Boko Haram was born. Boko Haram means the secular education is harama.

Goodluck Jonathan wanted to change the narrative so that the north can be repositioned, but they killed the project because of the hate against anything secular and Christianity. Though Christians in the north don't share the ideology. But because of marginalization, they haven't had the opportunities to lead in most cases.

Solution: There is a need for sensitization across all mosques and villages so that the archaic idealogy can change for the better. They should also ensure to erase terrorism. The terrorism started from having the wrong ideology that they need to jihad and by the context of their jihad, it means attacking and eliminating non muslims. Such ideology need to stop.

3. Impossible laws: The sharia law is not working. Nigeria is a secular state; people should not have sharia law in a secular state. There are no states in northern Nigeria where significant numbers of Christians are not found. It is now confusing why anyone would implement sharia laws in a state where there are diverse religious groups.

Hisbah should relax its laws on confiscating alcoholic beverages and allow for liberal ways of life. I agree that having moral police is very necessary, especially in this age where more than half of teenagers are rushing into frauds and other negative vices.

Solution: They should rely more on the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria instead of the sharia law. Also, these kinds of out-of-place behaviours of confiscating foods and items that the Nigerian constitution allows send negative signals to the rest of the world. Nobody will be happy to invest in such places.

The hate needs to stop. The aggression against other non-Muslims needs to stop.

That is when the north will start to develop. They are not more Muslims than Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and others.
All these advice would just appear like you're trying to change their minds to your own benefit.

Did anyone tell Dubai or Saudi to relax their Sharia Law?

Just leave them to rot if they want to, while the world keeps moving ahead. Me I don't even want their eye to open, so I can keep lashing their sweet girls at a subsidized rate cheesy

Religion/Islam is the major factor holding the North back; that’s the truth! You can’t promote primitive, medieval ideas and expect progress—it’s simply not possible. You prefer to spend billions of Naira on religious activities instead of using the same funds to educate your large population of youths, the majority of whom are illiterate. If you truly want to progress, you need to reduce your religious extremism and outdated practices. You can’t have it both ways! The UAE is an Islamic country, yet they embrace modern education, and the results are evident for all to see. The North needs to wake up; you can’t continue to hold back Nigeria’s progress.
Forget all this UAE, Saudi stuff.

Those guys are even stricter with their Islamic laws than northern Nigeria.

It’s just that because they have a very tiny population with huge oil and gas income, they can make everywhere to be shining like gold. But even to allow women to drive na wahala, and don’t forget there’s nothing like elections in those places, or freedom of speech and association, so northern Nigeria is more liberal than them in many ways.

They just need more money to upgrade their environment.

This matter funny.
Regions in Nigeria were led into a well arranged hall. The northern Nigeria chose the last seat at the back and even turned it around to back the rest wanting to claim they are the first.
Well, it's a critical situation for the rest to handle but somehow they have been able to manage the situation up till now.
But, a day shall come when everyone will choose to stand on their feet, water will find it's level and we'll all see who's been living in fool's paradise
