The President Bola Tinubu administration, through the National Bureau of Statistics, has debuted the Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey. “The concept seeks to ensure that information rolled out to the public is data-driven,” Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, revealed in a statement he signed on Wednesday titled ‘Ensuring Data Transparency: Tinubu govt debuts with CESPS.’ In its 2024 report, the CESPS collated crime incidents across the six geopolitical zones, with the Southeast recording the lowest rate of 6.2 million while the North West recorded the highest rate of 14.4 million incidents. On security, the CESPS data based on a survey conducted across the six geopolitical zones nationwide is as follows: South East – 6.2m, South West – 6.9m, South-South – 7.7m, North East – 7.9m, North Central – 8.8m, and North West – 14.4m. The statement read, “While the South East recorded the lowest incidence in crime experience with 6.2m, the North West was said to have had the largest with 14.4m. “However, the report released by the NBS is a pointer to the several efforts of the current administration in addressing the security challenges ubiquitous in the country. “Unlike what was obtained in the preceding year 2023, where crime incidences were pronounced high and at a crescendo, the 2024 report largely revealed the synergy between all relevant security architectures of the country – including military and paramilitary agencies, not forgetting private sector collaborations fostered by the Renewed Hope administration.” Bwala argued that Nigeria has witnessed a drastic decline in cases of incessant kidnapping in the South, armed banditry, and cattle rustling in the North, especially the North West. He also claimed that the activities of the proscribed group from the South East, Indigenous People of Biafra, and its affiliate – the Eastern Security Network, have largely reduced. He also cited the recent arrest of the Finland-based Simon Ekpa, who “had hitherto instigated endless onslaughts on people from the South East.” “On the Northern flank, Nigerians have seen fewer school attacks in the outgoing year, contrary to what was obtainable in recent years. “This, no doubt, further lends credence to the fight against crime by the current administration,” he stated. On inflation, the report revealed a slight increase relative to the recent natural disaster experienced by some northern states from the Northern extraction. “The recent flood disaster that ravaged Borno State with a spillover to states like Adamawa, Yobe, and Gombe States would no doubt have a devastating impact on agricultural produce given that the nation depends on the North for food production. “Understandably, the flood, with its concomitant effect, would naturally shoot up prices of goods,” argued Bwala. He said the administration responded swiftly to the issue of the food crisis by releasing 2.1 million bags of fertilisers to help farmers nationwide and N30bn to Federal Universities of Agriculture to support mechanised farming and truckloads of 50kg-size rice sent to 36 states to help combat hunger and reduce inflation. “Aside from the Federal Government’s quick intervention through the release of truckloads of grains to the sub-nationals, the Tinubu administration, in partnership with the World Bank, had earmarked $600m to fix 200,000km of rural roads aimed at facilitating food production and transportation to the various parts of the country. “All of these measures are geared towards addressing food insecurity, the result of which is expected to manifest in the coming months,” the statement read. On the economy, Bwala said the Tinubu administration reduced the debt-to-equity ratio to 68:32 within one year from around 97:3. He also cited the payment of backlog of forex arrears to the tune of N7bn and increased foreign reserve to over $40bn, all of which, he said, is “geared towards redirecting the entire governance architecture for a more robust and thriving economy that will benefit all and sundry.” https://punchng.com/south-east-records-lowest-crime-rate-as-presidency-unveils-security-survey/ |

fuckJones:Lol You actually think that someone arrested in far away Finland just a month ago, will have any bearing on armed people already in Nigeria? The South East has always had a lower insecurity rate than most places in Nigeria The only difference is that the authorities, the Lagos/Ibadan expressway media and their Northern cohorts, have always highlighted the incidents of insecurity in the South East so they falsely blame IPOB for it Few people care about insecurity, most only care about using insecurity to play politics for ulterior motives Watch the Lagos/Ibadan expressway media run from this thread because it doesn't give them enough ammunition to attack IPOB, while their own backyard is in worse insecurity situation |

Criminals hardly commit crime in their own homes they prefer commiting crimes far away from home. Also, the crime rate in Lagos for example is at it's lowest in December/ January when these criminals travel back home for Christmas and New Year. |

Clearly whoever wrote this failed in Maths What they shared are figures and not percentages which determine rates The SE has the lowest population in the country It is also interesting to note that most of the crimes in other regions are traceable to those who commit 99% of crimes in their region and 70% of crimes in other regions |

The Lagos press has been carrying on with a negative propaganda warfare against the east since 1966. They jungle statistics to make it look like thousands are killed in the east every month and that the east is hell on earth. This is deliberately done to scare aware investors and businesses from the east and to concentrate them in the west. Unfortunately, there has never been any serious push back from the east all these while. As a result, this kind of negative narratives have endured. If you beleive all they told you, you would think igbos are the biggest drug dealers, the biggest scammers and the biggest ritualists in Nigeria. Yet, Bobo Chicago is not from Umuahia and the capital of ritual killings is still Ogun state near Aba. |

Check crime rate per capital in the regions and the story will be totally different: Summary of Rankings based on the estimated population of each region, crime prevalence per million of population is as follows: 1. North East: 329.17 crimes per million people 2. North Central: 314.29 crimes per million people 3. South East: 295.24 crimes per million people 4. North West: 282.35 crimes per million people 5. South-South: 275.00 crimes per million people 6. South West: 191.67 crimes per million people |

Softmirror:While this might be true, it's poses a very disingenuous case of half-truths especially when you don't have sufficient data to back it up. Yet we can deduce from sample sizes of known stereotypes attached to the various major tribes in Nigeria who and who commits which crimes across the regions. Igbos are generally known for producing fake drugs, drinks and other products unsafe for consumption and also pushing drugs....so the chances that criminals who get caught for these crimes in the SW (for instance) will most likely mostly come from the SE. Then in the SE, the regular crimes were mostly UGM clashes with security forces and pockets of kidnappings here and there both of which are done by Simon Ekpa boys and Fulani herdsmen. MONDAY Sit at home might be unconstitutional, but it's not exactly a crime as people can choose to come to work on Mondays or not based on free-will Yorubas are mostly known for ritual murders, cyber fraud, organ/body parts harvesting, rape, and sometimes even pushing drugs, then regular armed robbery. So the chances of persons from the SW getting caught for these crimes are extremely high. Now when it comes to kidnapping and ransom collection (which the data from this report mostly highlights), we all know the Fulani and other foreigners from neighboring Niger republic, Chad republic etc have an organized militia ring that do majority of the kidnappings on our Federal highways, bushes, and farms across Nigeria. So if this data is anything to reckon with, it clearly shows all the Armageddon alarms of doom and desolation the people from the South West wished on Igbos due to the activities of UGM and criminals disguising as ESN to commit all sorts of crimes across the SE wasn't nearly as bad as the SW media tried to push it. It doesn't take a genius to know the agenda to paint the South East as the most uninhabitable and dangerous place in Nigeria or even Africa was masterfully concocted by the SW media and even on Nairaland...everyday on Nairaland, we see how Seun allowed his bigoted Yoruba mods to always push the most irrelevant reports of crime in the SE to front page for his people to feast on till it reached 10 pages.. but a more serious report of bandits killing 100 people in Zamfara or herdsmen wiping out a whole community in Benue barely makes FP let alone 3 pages because it's not about Igbos or important enough. I hate to cry Igbophobia or victim mentality but it's obvious there's a very dangerous and insidious agenda to blacklist the Igbos and SE in Nigeria. |

This is even a survey and not empirical Data. If you check data from police SE is far lowest. No be by media amplification of every misdemeanor |

MadPolitician:I’ve always said a huge part of our problem as Ndigbo and as a region are our useless, appeasing political class and elite who know the truth but are just too chicken to say it as it is….rather they’d want to parrot the false narrative put out there by ‘one Nigerianist’ Igbo-haters that ‘Igbo are kidnapping and murdering their own kinsfolk because they want Biafra’! All done to try and ingratiate themselves with their Yoruba/Fulani hegemonic masters in the hopes that if they’re seen to have thrown their people under the bus, they will be considered for national politics or appointments! |

South East have always been the safest in the country since Pre and Post colonial Nigeria because crimes committed are always reported unlike SW and North where they suppress figures and statistics of crime |

Flangelo12:Lol, it’s not per capital, they are using the actual figure. If per capital, SW is the most safe region according to the survey. Incidents South East – 6.2m South West – 6.9m South-South – 7.7m, To put it in perspective: —SE population is at 25m, with 6.2m incident, you have roughly 24.8 incident per 100 people. —SW population is at almost 45m, with 6.9m incident, you have 15 incident per 100 people. —SS population at almost 26m with 7.7m incident, that’s like 29 incident per 100 people. |
