I observed my recent submission ruffled some feathers and I have read some of the rebuttals from Mr Gbadebo and Mr Obedience. In this regard, I would address their concerns

Firstly, I agreed the relationship between the Japs and the US became irreversibly acrimonious and bellicious after the latter seized the assets of the former and also placed embargoes on oil and scrap metal sales.
The oil was needed for the survival of the Japs, the US made sure the Japs weren't able to purchase oil from other sources either.

Secondly, the Sakoku policy was implemented by preventing and killing any Japs that tried to leave the country, no one was allowed to leave and no one was allowed into the country. Total isolation from the outside world. They had no imperialist ambition for more than 200 years until the US forced their hands. This bears no semblance with the example of China Mr Obedience cited above.

Thirdly, the arrival of commodore Mathew Perry with his naval fleet did not only intimidate the Japs but the Japs realized the world has changed and they either modernize or perish, hence the Meji Restoration.

Finally, both the US and Japan strived to dominate the Pacific and obtain the resources that lies within. Both countries were imperialist, you can't tell me the reason the US was interested in the Pacific was just to trade and share Christmas gifts.

If the tables were reversed and it was the Japs who had the nuclear weapons first, they won't hesitate either.

Pearl harbor was the major military base the US used in its operations in the Pacific during the conflicts, the surprise attack by the Japs was supposed to force the US to negotiate because the Japs knew they were no match for the US. However, it only angered the US and they had their pound of flesh.

The embargos were initiated by the US because of the Japanese imperialist expansion. The embargos only came after the Japanese started their imperialist ambitions.

The Japanese empire tried to expand as early as the 1590s when they unsuccessfully attacked Korea twice. Imperialism has always been in Japanese blood .
The Japanese had no imperialist ambition because they didn't have the resources to do so, the moment the US open Japanese markets to the world they decided to expand

Let me remind you that before ww2 Japan had attack China resulting in the first Sino-Japanese War had also attack the Russian empire resulting in The Russo-Japanese War this war was fought between the Russian Empire and the Empire of Japan over rival imperial ambitions in Manchuria and the Korean Empire.
All this was done in the early stages of Japanese military might.

Prior to China being admitted into the WTO, and becoming the economic and military power she is now was China this aggressive to its neighbors?? China now being a force to be reckoned with has become belligerent to it's neighbours, keeps building artifical reefs on disputed island.and threatening its neighbors with invasion.

In conclusion China like the Japanese did not have the means to Foster its ambitious plans of dorminating asia, the moment the ability came they started to expand.

Perry coming to Japan did open the eyes of the Japanese, especially in the development of the Japanese navy. Was that an excuse for Japan to covet the lands of its neighbors?? Was Perry responsible for Japanese invasion of over a dozen nation's in Asia??

The US Navy wasn't always at pearl harbour, it was after 1940 when Japan invaded French Indochina, attempting to stop the flow of supplies reaching China. That the US move the Pacific fleet from San Diego to Hawaii. Prior to this the Japanese had already started being aggressive they invaded Manchuria. japan also expanded into China, leading to the Second Sino-Japanese War.

The aggression from the Japanese brought the US navy to Asia close to Japan backyard.

Also the Japanese navy was formidable, by the time the war started the japs carriers outnumbered the US in the Pacific, the battle of midway changed the tide in favour of the allies.

The USA and Japan both wanted influence on the asia Pacific, but the manner in which both went about it was different, the US didn't go about invading other nations unlike the japs who practically invaded any country who stood in their way from total asia dominace.
