Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has been released from Kuje Custodial Centre after meeting the bail conditions set by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja.

This was confirmed by the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, FCT Command, Adamu Duza, to PUNCH Online on Friday evening.

Duza said, “Yahaya Bello has been released after meeting the bail conditions. He was released this evening (Friday).”

“The Controller of NCoS FCT, Ajibogun Olatubosun, was on the ground to ensure his smooth release and that all protocols were observed.”

Bello was granted bail on Thursday by Justice MaryAnne Anenih in the sum of N500m.

The conditions included providing three sureties, each owning property in select high-value areas of Abuja, such as Maitama, Guzape, or Asokoro.

The court also ordered Bello to surrender his passport and restricted his travel outside Nigeria without prior permission.

The former governor, along with Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalam Hudu, faces a 16-count charge of conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and unlawful possession of property, brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

All three have pleaded not guilty.

Justice Anenih had rejected Bello’s initial bail application on procedural grounds but granted bail to his co-defendants.

Bello’s fresh application was approved on Thursday, leading to his release.

You can go try your own audio jail too nah. Kids running around online with no comprehension of how governance works. Smh.

The crime he is being tried for is bailable and he has been incarcerated even when he is still presumed innocent by law.

Just one day alone has dented him let alone spending days, having his assets and bank accounts under temporary confiscation yet he is still facing prosecution in court that is more likely to jail him eventually.

Only the living can be jailed or executed for crime, not the dead so he deserves to live until he's proven guilty and convicted by the court.

Everyone listen now and listen good. If you want to steal, steal big so you can afford your bail money. If you steal 100k and they put your bail for 500k, you will likely celebrate your 100yrs anniversary in prison.

You see? The case will then be dragged for 40 years. And yet a young man who stole chicken got sentenced to death by the same useless court system in Nigeria.

Bello stole 130 billion naira. That's money for over 20 1000 bed world class hospitals in Kogi State. That's enough money to build a standard school in each local government in Kogi. That's enough money to have employed and paid a living wage to thousands of Kogi State indigenes. Enough money to have expanded and trained more doctors, technicians, engineers, bio-chemists and more in Kogi State. That's more than enough money to have paid every pensioner his or her entitlements in Kogi State. How many people have died due to Bello's thievery? Countless thousands.

But this bastard, embezzled this money and was busy sponsoring thugs in prado jeeps to Abuja to harass end SARS protesters. This same dog dug up a federal road and cut it in half so that election materials will not reach the senatorial zone of his opponent. He sent his thugs to burn a woman alive in her home just because she belonged to a different political party.

And yet he gets to walk free? There is no talk of getting his accounts frozen. Nothing about confiscating any of his assets. Nothing!

Imagine this situation across all the 36 states of Nigeria since 1999. Nigeria has earned over 300 billion US dollars from crude oil sales since 1999 to date. Where is all that money? Blatant thieves like this is why the country remains an uninhabitable mess.

Until the EFCC starts probing people who stand as sureties for these criminal governors, this mess will continue. Asking a thief to pay 500 million as bail from the same money he stole is just madness. As a civil servant that Bello was (he was an accountant in a federal ministry), could his entire earnings amount to 500 million? Hell no!
