I won’t lie — I get really sad whenever I remember Africa, especially Nigeria. Chile is regarded as a developing country, and while I’ve lived here for 16 months, I don’t see anything “developing” about Chile. I mean, you’d go to a conference, and when they ask developing nations to stand up, Nigeria, other African countries, and Chile would all rise together. That comparison makes zero sense to me.

I lived in Lagos, Nigeria’s biggest metropolitan city, and until I left, we never had running water. We always had to pump water from a borehole, and even then, the water wasn’t drinkable. We had to buy sachets of pure water every single week. There was no waste management system, so whenever our waste bin got full, we had to wake up at 6 a.m. to find an aboki (waste collector) to come and carry the trash. This was in 2024, in the largest and most modern city in Nigeria.

If life in Lagos is like that, I can’t even begin to imagine how life is in the smaller towns and villages across Nigeria. The disparity becomes even starker when I compare it to Chile. I briefly went out with a Chilean girl who invited me to visit her village, and to my surprise, her village had piped running water in every home, stable electricity, and a waste management system. A village!

Back home, we haven’t even solved the most basic issues in many African countries — how can we begin to tackle larger problems like growing the economy or creating jobs? Anytime I think about Africa, I feel a deep sadness. It’s frustrating to see how far behind we are, even on the fundamentals that make life livable. The black man has failed!!!!
which Africa?

For someone who lived in Lagos too, I'm going to say Lagos is a shithole. I'd been to smaller towns/villages and they had running water that was drinkable (if you wanted to) and a waste management system (every Saturday morning). Lagos isn't all that... But I get your point, though.

Which town in Nigeria has available drinking water and waste management system?

My home town has that. My late grandma would make us clean the house every Friday coz trash truck would come every Saturday morning to collect the waste (they won't wait for you). Plus good water and 12hrs light(depending on your area).

Re: Memoirs From Chile by tensazangetsu20(op): 3:21pm On Dec 22, 2024
I’ve been thinking about how the rich just keep getting richer while the poor seem to fall further behind. Back in high school, around 2012 or 2013, the richest person in the world was probably worth about $50 billion at most. Fast forward to today, and we’ve got someone worth $400 billion. It’s not like the global population suddenly exploded in that time. At this rate, we’ll probably see a human trillionaire before any African country even achieves a trillion-dollar economy.

It’s strange how money works. Once you have it, it feels so much easier to make more, almost like wealth attracts wealth. It reminds me of the parable of the talents—those who have are given even more, while those who don’t have anything are left with nothing. I think about my uncle sometimes. He sells spare parts, has no formal education, but he’s the wealthiest among all my uncles. And every year, he just seems to keep getting richer, even though there are people in the family who’ve spent years praying for his downfall. Life’s just… odd like that.

So you mean Chile should be classified as developed country?

The varying income equality in Chile prevents it from achieving that status

Okay, Chile is actually a fantastic country for japa now especially as developed economies are rolling out anti-immigration policies.

They are also doing so here. The elections in 2025 are heavily influenced by immigration and the far right leader is an extremist racist

Oh people should research more. There's solid options out there though blocked off by language barrier. I have been to Europe precisely Italy. Was in la spezia and went all the way to Milan and explored a few border towns close to Switzerland and Chile is a very much more developed country than Italy. I am not even in the capital city of Santiago. These guys have built a paradise for themselves here cheesy cheesy
Now that you've been in Chile for a year and hopefully now seen the good and bad, do you still think it's a much more developed country than Italy?

In terms of infrastructure yes but probably Italy is better if you are a low income worker as the wealth distribution is a tad bit better. Chile is hard for those who earn minimum wage or can’t work in a good profession.
