TROOPS DESTROY TERRORIST CAMPS AROUND BICHI HILL IN KATSINA STATE

Troops of the Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma have destroyed several terrorist camps around Bichi Hill in the Danmusa Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State. This operation came in response to credible intelligence that revealed active terrorist activities in the area, which had culminated in assaults on local communities in Danmusa, Safana, and Kankara Local Government Area on 19 December 2024.

In a combined ground and air offensive, troops targeted these camps in an effort to dismantle the terrorists' operations and restore peace to the affected areas. The operation involved precision air strikes conducted by the Air Component on identified terrorist locations during multiple passes.

Despite the air strikes, some surviving terrorists attempted to regroup in the vicinity of Bichi Hill, leading to a fierce firefight with ground troops. This engagement lasted for several hours, but the terrorists were ultimately overpowered by the troops superior firepower. As a further blow to the terrorists’ ability to escape, the Air Component platforms tracked fleeing terrorists on motorcycles and conducted additional successful strike against them.

Reports from local sources indicate that the operations resulted in a significant number of terrorist casualties, including the reportedly fatal injuries of notorious kingpins *Manore and Dogo Nahalle*. In addition to the terrorists neutralised, the operation dismantled several terrorist camps located within the high ground thus crippling the terrorists' operational capabilities.

Prior to these military operations, communities surrounding Maidabino, Yantumaki and Mara and other parts of Danmusa and Safana LGAs had been under persistent threat from the terrorists, leading to mass displacements among local residents.

In light of the recent successes, the Joint Task Force Operation Fansan Yamma want to again reassure the public of our commitment to safeguarding the lives of the people and urged them to refrain from harbouring or supporting criminal elements in any form.

The Theatre Commander Operation Fansan Yamma Major General Oluyinka Olalekan Soyele on behalf of the troops expresses his resolve to combat terrorism and all forms of crimes in the Northwest Zone and Niger State towards ensuring peace and security in the affected communities.

A Dangerous Dimension as ISWAP now deploy armed drones in attacks

On December 24, 2024, a significant escalation in the tactics of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) was witnessed as they employed armed drones in a coordinated attack against Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wajiroko, located in Damboa LGA.

This attack represents a troubling development in the fight against terrorism, revealing how non-state actors are adopting sophisticated technology for attacks.

The first assault occurred at approximately 13:00 hours, when ISWAP militants launched an attack using mortars and small arms against troops at FOB Wajiroko. Despite the fierce firefight, the troops (TPS) managed to successfully repel the attack, forcing the terrorists to withdraw in disarray.

However, the situation escalated shortly after, around 13:23 hours, when FOB Wajiroko came under a second attack this time utilizing multiple armed drones equipped with locally fabricated grenades.

Telemetry and observations from the scene confirmed the presence of at least four different armed drones engaged in the assault. This shift in strategy by ISWAP signifies their increasing sophistication and adaptability on the battlefield, posing a new level of threat

Clearly a 3rd party is involved in ISWAP using on drones. Clearly we need drone jammers in every FOB and custom/DSS need to start documenting serial numbers of drones imported into the country.

That YouTube video of the CDS calling out foreign NGOs for helping out terrorists comes to mind. At this point no foreign entity should be allowed into the Northern part of the country be it UN, A.U or WHO, USAiD or any bloody NGO. Counter insurgency operations have dragged on too long in Nigeria. We need to bury these terrorists elements before they evolve completely to a much worse nuisance.

UNDER MY LEADERSHIP, AFN WILL CONTINUE TO SUSTAIN ITS OPERATIONAL TEMPO AND POSTURE ACROSS MILITARY DEPLOYMENTS - CDS

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa has said the Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to sustain its operational tempo and posture across military deployments both at home and abroad. He disclosed this on Thursday, 26 December 2024 while delivering his Christmas Address at his Luncheon with the troops of Joint Task Force Northwest Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) at Giginya Cantonment, Sokoto.

The CDS further said the season reminds us of the enduring values of love, hope, unity, and selflessness that troops of Armed Forces of Ngeria and other security agencies exemplify daily in the service to our beloved nation. He extended his heartfelt appreciation to troops for their unwavering dedication and sacrifices in ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria, particularly in their deployment to OPFY.

General Musa stated that despite the inherent challenges, their daily commitment to duty in the field remains a source of inspiration and further exemplifies the true spirit of patriotism required for defeating the threats to our nation's peace and stability. He further stressed that the recent deployment of the Special Operations Brigade and some combat enablers to dislodge and eliminate the re-emergence of Lakurawas' terrorists from their camps in Sokoto and Kebbi states, and successes so far achieved as testament to the commitment to resolving and combating all security threats across the theatres of operations.

He urged the troops to remain steadfast and resolute in their responsibilities, noting that the coming year presents an opportunity to make significant progress in overcoming the challenges confronting our nation and need to strive to ensure that the coming year is marked by transformative victories in all the operational theatres. He therefore assure them of his necessary support and resources to carry out their tasks effectively. He used the occasion to visit the Wounded-in-Action troops at the 8 Division Military Services and Hospital, and also honour and remember the comrades who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

Earlier in his Welcome Address and while appreciating the CDS, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 OFPY, Major General Ibikunle Ajose said the event underscores unflinching support and commitment of the CDS to the welfare, morale, and operational efficiency of the troops, stressing that his frequent visits to the theatre to assess troops' operational readiness and performance as well as their well-being is an indication of the passion and love he has for the troops and his desire to end insecurity in the Northwest Region in particular and Nigeria at large.

The event was attended by the Principal Staff Officers from Defence and Services Headquarters, Representative of His Eminence Sultan of Sokoto, and Heads and Representatives of various Security Agencies in Sokoto State among others.

French Military Base in Faya Handed Over to Chadian Army

The French military formally handed over its base in Faya to the Chadian army in a retreat ceremony held on December 26. This move follows Chad’s recent suspension of its military cooperation agreement with France.

In a related development, an Antonov 124 cargo aircraft departed from N’Djamena on the same day, carrying over 70 tons of military equipment and supplies, signaling the logistical withdrawal of French forces from the region.

The handover of the Faya base marks a significant milestone in the reconfiguration of Chad-France defense relations. The French base, previously a critical part of operations in the Sahel, will now be under full control of the Chadian military.

Chadian authorities have expressed their intention to strengthen national security through greater reliance on local forces. The French withdrawal is part of a broader trend of declining foreign military presence in Africa amidst shifting alliances and calls for increased sovereignty by regional governments.

The CAS, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, confirmed the reactivation of a Super Puma and an ATR-42 aircraft to bolster counter-terrorism operations. Note that the 2022 budget proposal made provision for the reactivation of 2x AS332 Super Puma’s.
Only 2 NAF super pumas have flown within the last decade NAF 567 & NAF 565.

DSS ARRESTS FAKE NEWS MERCHANT MAHDI SHEHU

Mahdi Shehu faces arrest by DSS over allegations of sharing a misleading video that went viral online.

Kaduna-based activist and political commentator Mahdi Shehu has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) due to allegations concerning a misleading video with potential national security ramifications.

The arrest took place over the weekend after the video gained traction on social media, prompting concerns about its sensitive nature.

Sources indicate that Shehu is currently in custody in Kaduna and may face court proceedings shortly.

The video in question involved the sharing of outdated footage, falsely suggesting that the Nigerian government intended to establish a French military base in the North-West.

Authorities have reportedly issued directives for Shehu's arraignment while ensuring that his rights are upheld during his detention.

Additionally, it has been noted that Shehu previously faced legal issues, including an arrest for attempted extortion, as explained by former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami.

Shehu's lawyer contended that his client's arrest was politically motivated, stemming from calls for an investigation into former President Muhammadu Buhari and his associates.

Malami's firm, however, countered these claims, asserting that Shehu was apprehended for extortion and related offenses.

FORGING GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS: NAF EXPLORES ADVANCED DEFENCE SOLUTIONS IN QATAR

In furtherance of his Command Philosophy to transform the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) into an agile and resilient force which effectively fulfils the airpower imperatives of national security, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar was recently in Doha, Qatar to engage with Barzan Holdings, a leading Qatari defence company. Discussions centred on leveraging opportunities for technology transfer, and the acquisition of cutting-edge solutions to meet the operational demands of the NAF. This aligns with the CAS’s strategic intent to enhance the NAF's core competencies through innovation and collaboration, underscoring the importance of global partnerships in the development of critical national security capabilities.
The engagement with Barzan Holdings also reflects the broader objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s visit to Qatar in March 2024, which sought to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of security and economic cooperation.
