Esu is one of the deities and the right hand man of Orunmila. He is not the opponent of God. He is not Satan.

The big mistake of religion is to assume that God has an institutional opponent. God does not have an institutional opponent and all evil emanate from human beings.

Who is Esu?

Esu is the deity that rules junctions. Junctions means alternatives. Esu is the one sitting at decision points. It helps us to determine the right thing to do amidst options. Esu is the most trusted friend of Orunmila that helps Orunmila to communicate with the heavenlies. The Odu of Esu is Ogunda Iwori which means carefully contemplated actions.

In the olden days, when people's wrongs are found out, they will try to absolve themselves of blame by saying Esu pushed them to do what they did and this led to the common saying 'Esu ma se mi, omo elomiran ni KO se' meaning 'Esu do not manipulate me, move on to go and manipulate others'. These and other common happenstances were what Bishop Ajayi Crowther and others added together which led to them synchronizing Esu with Satan thinking that he rules over all evil deeds but they were wrong. Esu is a spirit that has been incarnated severally and may even be incarnated presently unlike Satan which has never been incarnated. Bishop Crowther and etc were wrong because a person perfectly aligned with Esu will never take an action that can be faulted because of the Ogunda Iwori. Incarnations of Esu or its children are always very articulate.
