NCC Approves Mobile Tariff Increases: Voice Calls to Cost ₦15.40/Min, SMS at ₦5.60, 1GB Data at ₦1,400 Starting January 2025

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved new mobile service tariffs, set to take effect in January 2025:
• Voice Calls: ₦15.40 per minute (up from ₦11)
• SMS: ₦5.60 per message (up from ₦4)
• 1GB of Mobile Data: ₦1,400 (up from ₦1,000)

These increases come at a time when inflation in Nigeria has reached a record 34.6% in November 2024, the highest in nearly 30 years. This inflation spike, driven by rising food prices and high energy costs, has put additional financial pressure on Nigerians, making mobile services more expensive.

Despite these challenges, the tariff hikes are expected to encourage greater usage of mobile data, particularly for communication on apps like WhatsApp. Telecom operators that provide superior mobile data Quality of Service (QoS) are likely to benefit the most from the trend toward increased data usage.

While the tariff increase provides some relief to service providers facing rising operational costs, it is still a short-term solution to the broader economic issues, particularly the ongoing impact of foreign exchange (FX) fluctuations.
The longer-term solution lies in fostering a strong local tech ecosystem that can reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported technology and enable operators to pay for local infrastructure in domestic currency, potentially shielding the sector from future inflationary pressures.

Despite the high level of inflation, no telecom operator is declaring end of year losses, all of them are still declaring extra high profit margins, this shows that this increase is not justified, just another way to instill more sufferings on Nigeriansembarassed

Read nau!

Profit margins are gone! Continuing business like this for the telecom industries means the sector will die!

Are telecom SPs ain't buying fuel, and diesels for their equipments? Are they not sourcing for dollars at high rates to buy and import their equipments and products?

Think! Think!! Think!!!

At last my foresight has materialised. I won't clap for myself because it was pretty obvious and inevitable for those with any brain cells, but it was held off for so long I got confused.

The prices you're paying for their services are like saying petrol is ₦200 per litre or a loaf of bread that's now 2k was still 500 naira. The government has really damaged the fortunes of these telecoms companies by being the ones to determine if they would increase price or not -- while at the same time increasing their own petrol price and dollar price that was directly controllable by them.

I know Nigerians will still complain with much indignation because this is a society where you're brought up to look only after your interests, even if you sacrifice every other person in the world. That is why the country is a failed state -- nobody cares how it will work for everyone, but for himself only. Even the pastors preach this venom every Sunday in church: "my case is different".

Anyway, who wan buy data, slide into my DM make I begin reap my rewards after 2 years

This was the same excuse MTN was giving that made them put high purchase prices on their lines years ago, other companies came that crashed prices before MTN decided to crash theirs, despite their previous reasons for putting extortionate prices on sim cards. The truth is that these companies were making almost free money before, bad govt policies are now making them to work for their money by incurring high operational costs angry

Una too like to dey attack MTN.

Is it MTN that is driving the increment in prices? What truth is in what you are typing? Making free money even when fueling their base stations EVERYDAY and securing this stations themselves?

I guess your best bet is to bring your own company to help crash this market. Crash the market at almost 35% inflation.

Every sector, including energy, has increased prices, and you want the telecom sector to not do the same because they operate in an insulated economy? Do you even know what the telecom sector contribute to the GDP? Read up so that you will know how critical they are to the economy.
