Nigeria Missing Among Top African Countries With Highest Debt To IMF In 2024 by zero8zero(op): 9:45am On Dec 28, 2024
As several African nations continue to grapple with economic instability, many have turned to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial assistance, resulting in significant debt obligations.

These loans, while intended to stabilize economies, often come with stringent conditions that can hinder long-term development.

The latest data, updated on December 23, 2024, reveals the African countries with the highest outstanding IMF credit.

Egypt tops the list with a staggering $9.3 billion, far exceeding other nations. Kenya follows with $3.02 billion, while Angola is close behind with $2.9 billion. Côte d’Ivoire has climbed to the fourth position with $2.75 billion, overtaking Ghana, which now ranks fifth with $2.51 billion.

Other nations on the list include the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with $1.6 billion, Ethiopia with $1.31 billion, and South Africa with $1.14 billion.

Cameroon ranks ninth with $1.13 billion, and Morocco joins the top 10 with $1.1 billion, replacing Senegal, which has dropped off the list, information on Business Insider Africa revealed.

The reliance on IMF loans has sparked concerns about the long-term implications for these economies.

Additionally, the restrictive economic reforms tied to these loans, known as Structural Adjustment Programs (SAPs), have been criticized for exacerbating socioeconomic inequalities.

As African nations remain vulnerable to external shocks, such as fluctuations in commodity prices and global financial crises, the growing debt burden underscores the need for more sustainable financial solutions.

The IMF’s role in the region continues to be a subject of intense debate, with questions lingering over whether its assistance helps or hinders long-term economic stability.

Please we are the giant of Africa and we can't afford to be missing on this list. Someone should find a subhead or code for us to use and borrow. Egypt can't overdo us.

Toh

When I was talking about Egypt using old glory, some people don't understand

What Egypt acquired those debt for is not even close to 40% completion

South Africa is not here or there regarding loans as their opposition most especially Malema will raise dust. But their internally generated income are being used mostly for maintaining government infrastructures which are been deliberately vandalised by the same contractors that will repair them

I looked towards the East after I read this, and saw water pouring massively there. I thought whether the rainy season started earlier than usual, but was quickly corrected that rainfall doesn't come with high salt content.

When they see the huge amount Tinubu govt uses to service debt they cry. This is the positive result and the reason why naira is falling because the dollars earn through subsidy removal are not sold to Nigerians but are used to service old debt and boost the foreign reserve .

As at today, Nigeria foreign reserve is 42 billion dollars

What of our internal debts?

That is a critical component of our total debt. Don't forget there's been 2 dollar denominated FGN bonds and others in Naira issued by DMO.

What is the plan to settle this obligations? Printing of Naira and worsening the current inflation or taxing the people to death?

IMF is just one of the several creditors so nothing to rejoice about here.

As of November 30, 2024, Nigeria's total IMF credit outstanding was $613,625,000.

Kudos to Pa Tinubu, but I'd prefer we owe IMF $100billion and have a better country abeg.

Let it be on record that I said this:
Anytime President Tinubu eventually leaves office, 2027 0r 2031, the next President should never ever contemplate returning fuel subsidies and multiple forex rates. He or she can improve the policies where necessary, but should maintain the free market introduced by this great strategist we have now.
