Cost of planting varies by season, inputs, set up, location, agricultural practices etc. If you already have already cleared the land, this could be your estimated cost per acre: UNSTAKED CUCUMBER Ploughing----------------------------------------------------------------30,000 Seeds---------------------------------------------------------------------40,000 Inputs(fertiliser, herbicide, pesticide)-------------------------60,000 Irrigation set up(optional)-----------------------------------------400,000 Labour(planting, spraying, fertilising, maintenance)----100,000 Fuel/Diesel-------------------------------------------------------------50,000 Miscellaneous--------------------------------------------------------20,000 TOTAL-------------------------------------------------------------------700,000 700k is a good estimate to get started. However, bear in mind, prices are location dependent and assumes you have things like water/borehole set up and knowledge of the processes to optimise yield. emmaachile2:Good evening sir. Please can you drop the feeding routine for 150-200 plants of the same Darina f1. Please 🙏🙏 Water is not an issue 🙏 |
| Re: My Agric Farm Diary (cucumber, Tomato, Pepper, Etc) by emmaachile2(op): 11:20am On Dec 25, 2024 |
kennethfranc:We are using six fertilizers for the mixture and it's never fixed for crops like Darina. The one used by this person are Npk 20-10-10, 15-15-15, SSP, magnesium sulphate, mop, calcium nitrate in different ratios and the schedule is not fixed because when we observe deficiencies, we resume the nutrition. Currently he is using a 10 day schedule in place of a 14 day and the mixture he is using is dependent on the growth of the plants. So far, three schedules but different formulas and with all the magnesium soil application, the plants are begining to show potassium and magnesium deficiency. Some are currently carrying 16 fruits. Magnesium is best fertigated but he is using manual watering. Means he has to spray through leaves foliage for quick correction and the potassium has to upped to cover up for the potassium deficiency on the leaves. |

emmaachile2:This seems too complicated for a first time farmer. I guess I'll start with cu999 for now. But I'll really like to experience 25+ fruits per plant |

kennethfranc:How many fruits per plant in cu999. If it's treated well, I believe all cucumbers do well Your best option is to get an agronomist or someone into nutrition. With them, you will get the best output. Most farmers won't even get 10 fruits because they lack the knowledge. To get an agronomist, your plants must be 1000 at least to make up for the pay from your end. I prefer to handle farms of over 4,000 plants but anything below 1000 plants is a no-no because they will be struggling to pay consultancy fees. But one thing is sure, results will be way above the average farms and in some cases 5x more! |

emmaachile2:Thanks for sharing. 1. How often should the mebo be applied during the plants lifetime to avoid abuse? 2. The use of furadan to control whiteflies is a new revelation to me, I normally use it to treat my soil against nematodes in my raised bed nursery and b4 transplanting. No wonder i didn't hav much issue with whiteflies. How best is it used against whiteflies since it's not soluble in water for spraying? 3. I was expecting imidacloprids among your list but I couldn't find it there. Any reservations? |
| Re: My Agric Farm Diary (cucumber, Tomato, Pepper, Etc) by emmaachile2(op): 7:51pm On Dec 25, 2024 |
Mrdellychy:Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid insecticide and is grouped as class 4. They are also effective but whiteflies seem to resist them now. The best option I have used for farms so far is punch insecticide a group 6 class consisting of abamectin which seem to reduce the whitefly population to the bearest minimum. |

| Re: My Agric Farm Diary (cucumber, Tomato, Pepper, Etc) by emmaachile2(op): 3:48am On Dec 26, 2024 |
betabread:Furrow irrigation is not different from other irrigation. The idea is to get water to the plants. |

emmaachile2:Didn't know you have a thread on cucumber and other vegetables sir. Am cancelling out complete fertilizer, got winner and vita croplift bio to start with, will substitute nitrabor with the last formulation you assisted me with. Now you are getting me confused between Darina and mydas. |
| Re: My Agric Farm Diary (cucumber, Tomato, Pepper, Etc) by emmaachile2(op): 2:07pm On Dec 27, 2024 |
opes:Where is the confusion?. They are similar and behave alike in fruiting habit |
| Re: My Agric Farm Diary (cucumber, Tomato, Pepper, Etc) by opes: 6:30pm On Dec 27, 2024 |
emmaachile2:Noted (was just joking). I will get SSP with the previous formulation and save on nitrabor ( since it will only be used once during the production cycle).Till February, the weather not favourable now. Thanks always. |

emmaachile2:Fertigation is better than burying the fertilizer and top dressing but the disadvantages is the frequency of its application, maybe weekly unlike direct burying of fertilisers into the soil that the application is fortnightly. How much is Darina sold for 1000 seeds? It is Gynoecious I guess, while mydas is parthenocarpic. |
| Re: My Agric Farm Diary (cucumber, Tomato, Pepper, Etc) by emmaachile2(op): 11:02pm On Dec 28, 2024 |
opes:It's parthenocarpic but Darina 10g (300 seeds+) is sold for 7000 naira but currently scarce. |
