Ogun Airport Leading In West African Sub- Region With Longest Runway by zero8zero(op): 5:42pm On Dec 29, 2024
The Ogun State government has declared that currently, the Gateway International Agro-cargo Airport is the best in Nigeria and the West African corridor, boasting of the longest runway.

The state government shared the details and the unique selling point during a meeting with the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) at the facility, which was jointly hosted by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya; Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga Dairo; the Airport Manager, Captain Dapo Olumide; and the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade.

At the meeting, Akinsanya declared that the airport has the best facilities in Nigeria and the West African corridor, with the runway, capable of accommodating wide-bodied aircraft.

According to Akinsanya, the airport, which is 95-98 percent complete, has a runway that is 4 km long and 60 m wide, which equals 17 lanes of road infrastructure, making it the longest and largest in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.

He added that the size of the airport, especially with its long runway, was consciously planned to accommodate international flights coming in with wide-body aircraft like a Boeing 777 or A350.

He said: “While the total size of the airport is 5,000 hectares, we started this first phase on 900 hectares, so what you see as an open space is part of a master plan because this is also an aerotropolis.

“There are going to be hotels, amusement parks, and cinemas in the future; that is all part of the master plan. You can’t put everything together in one day.

“Overall, where we are today, I am pretty certain that we are ready to go commercial. Once we get the approval from the NCAA for commercial operations, we will commence. Right now, we have the approval for chartered flights.

“The runway has been completed for a long time, the fire station is done, and you see the two fire tenders outside, with a new addition making it three. Right now, we are class six, and with that additional fire tender, we are moving to class seven,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Airport Manager, Captain Olumide, disclosed that the airport, when fully operational, would be the first in Nigeria to operate with an operating permit, while the Commissioner for Transportation stated that the airport is situated within a special agricultural processing zone and is one of the eight zones across Nigeria, describing the airport as a legacy project of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Captain Olumide linked the slight delay in the completion of the project to the government’s desire to attain a new status of operation, as opposed to what is common in the industry.

According to him, the operating permit would enable the airport to attain the ENCAS 2023 permit, which is more stringent than the Aerodrome Certification.

“There are some people who have said, why is our airport taking so long, that an airport can be built in six months? What they don’t understand is that since the good old days of the FCAA, we have what they call an Aerodrome Certificate.

Laughable 😂

How many Ogunians can afford a bus fare from Lagos to Ogun state? Talk MORE of buying a flight ticket.

Most of the population of Ogun state do not have that disposable income such as to afford a flight ticket. I know what I'm talking about.

This so called airport will hardly see 100 passengers in 4 months period this is not like Anambra Airport, Imo, Enugu and Asaba airport- including Omagwa airport in Port Harcourt that sees a high patronage from their people as a result of high disposable income.

......The money that was wasted on this elephant project should have been used to build all the deplorable roads in Abeokuta. Currently, Ogun state does not have a single motorable road to boast of.

Honestly, I don't think this is worth celebrating. A airport with red sands all around is classified as the best in Nigeria?

Our politicians usually celebrate useless things as if we are still in d 17th century when people don't have access to what is obtainable globally.

Re: Ogun Airport Leading In West African Sub- Region With Longest Runway by adicius: 5:15am On Dec 30, 2024
People don't fully understand this project. The 5000 hectares that this airport sits on is much bigger than the one proposed for lekki international airport 3500 hectares. Also, they want to build an aeropolis within the 5000 hectares. This is like a mini city which will include series of hotels, hospital, hangers, businesses, recreational areas, security, hangers, luxury apartments, residential, especially for staff etc, park/gardens, logistic and tech hub etc etc. this will gradually be built over time by investors etc in the coming years. It will massively open up Ogun state for business and world class investment opportunities. That's the big deal about this airport.

Did you even read the post at all? It's an Agro/Cargo airport currently under construction, not even meant for passenger flights.

Now talking about those who can afford flights and transportation, is it your people who stand from Lagos to Owerri in CN Okoli and Chisco buses that can afford flight tickets? The ones who do, we see how NDLEA displays their faces every week for drug crimes.

You just open mouth waa dey talk nonsense, ozuor!

They are always fixated with the "longest this" and "the tallest" that. That was how one Arigbosola went and contracted a mad artist to carve out "the tallest drum" in the world for him. That left our dear people of Osyn state with one nonsensical edifice as tall as a tree, that adds zero valeu to anyones life over there. The same Arigbosola went for the airport with "the longest runway" and couldn't finish. You hear of the biggest city in West Africa, the first TV station in Africa (even when facts have devoured propaganda on that), everywhere and everytime, there is a desperate project to claim a first this or a first that. It's an obsession that helps nobody but the village ego of the clannish propagandists.

See bro, we cant be too too pessimistic and critical all the time.

These politicians have messed us up (I dont vote and I dont campaign, maybe Sowore in 2019 -- and that's it).

But when they make a stride or something commendable, it doesnt mean we should completely discount it. Like me, I didnt like the environment of this airport. Im already seeing too much red sand.

But feats like longest runway, deepest port etc. are feats we can cheer about once in a while.

We can criticise, but learn to commend a little. Just a little at least bro.

I won't deal with your case from a tribal perspective but from the perspective of a slowpoke that you are. in your dumb mind you thought the airports was meant for transporting humans alone!? for your information that airport was built majorly for cargo purpose which in turn might end up serving the human purposes.

the proximity of Ibadan and Lagos airports made me felt it's uncalled for but for your reasoning, it's a No! No!! No!!! thinking everyone in Ogun State is low lifer shallow minded individuals like you are just scored you a zero. learn not coming to the internet to vomit trash.

This airport is very good. Could be the best in West Africa.

1. First pic is passenger terminal
2. Is Cargo terminal.

There is also room for expansion in the master plan.
