Inflation: Organised Labour Pushes For Minimum Wage Increase In 2025 by fergie001(mod): 9:57pm On Jan 01, 2025
The Organised Labour says it is pushing for an annual increase to the ₦70,000 minimum wage paid to workers in Nigeria.

Labour said it is important that the minimum wage paid to workers reflect a rise in inflation every year.

“What we are pushing on for Labour is that instead of you (the government) waiting for five years to increase the minimum wage, you will now look at the inflation of the last five years and try to make some adjustments, why can’t we reflect the inflation on an annual basis?” TUC boss Festus Osifo said on Channels Television’s Politics Today on January 1, 2025.

The President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) said members of the organisation as well as their colleagues in the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have begun talks in this regard.

“For example, we have entered January 2025, by the 15th of January 2025, the National Bureau of Statistics is going to release the inflation figure for December,” he explained.

“So, what we are pushing for as Labour is that, if for example, the inflation figure is 35%, apply that 35% to the ₦70,000 minimum wage so that it will become reflective of what the true value is.

“When we get to 2026, you will also do similar application. That is actually what we are pushing. We shouldn’t be waiting for five years.

“In the new Act now is three years to do those adjustments but we could be doing them systemically by applying the inflation as of December of the preceding year to what the minimum wage is.

“This is part of the position that we are also going to canvass this year. We started the conversation last year but we will continue it in 2025.”

In July 2024, after months of protracted talks, the Federal Government and labour unions reached a consensus figure of ₦70,000 minimum wage which was later approved by President Bola Tinubu.

The increase came five years after the last review pegged at ₦30,000 but with the astronomic rise in cost of living, attributed to a more than quadruple hike in energy costs and petrol subsidy removal, labour unions have argued that ₦70,000 cannot take any worker home and thus demanded a decent living wage.

It would have been fun to not push for any increases. After the 2023 election, Nigeria needs to suffer very well, next time they see a wicked tribalist with nothing to offer apart from tribal hate and corruption, they will all agree that evil is evil.

I will continue to say this, this rogue leaders believe the masses have to pay for the reforms to work while they reveille in luxury!!

For God sake Africa is full of depraved minds !!

Govt should subsidize every common items and mainstay of the economy whilst they reduce their own self spending!

Let's see if the money is not enough!!
This so called reforms that is affecting only the common man is bound to fail, whatever you do for anyone that brings pain is failure from the start!

Economy and medicine are not equal

Re: Inflation: Organised Labour Pushes For Minimum Wage Increase In 2025 by BuharisBoy: 10:11pm On Jan 01, 2025
Why not implement an annual salary increase of 34% instead of limiting adjustments to just the minimum wage? How many workers actually earn only the minimum wage as their salary? Furthermore, what happened to the consequential adjustments to salaries? What became of the salary template prepared by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC)?

Instead, workers are arbitrarily given a uniform increment of 40,000 naira across the board. Is this approach fair? Isn’t this a form of fraud? While 40,000 naira might seem significant for those earning below 100,000 naira, how impactful is it for those earning above 300,000 naira?

Additionally, how is it that civil service rules are violated at will? The purchasing power of civil servants is being eroded with impunity, and yet, no one seems to be addressing the issue. How can the country progress when the welfare and economic stability of its workforce are continually undermined?

Last year when fuel was N500, TUC and NLC were tricked into accepting the 70k minimum wage by Tinubu.
Tinubu asked them, will you accept 70k minimum wage without price increment in
Fuel? or will you accept more than 70k while I increase fuel price to enable me pay workers, then they opted for 70k, Only for Tinubu to go ahead and increase fuel price few weeks later grin So I think they are smarter now to play the cards.

You know Tinubu very well.
Instead of increasing the minimum wage, Tinubu would prefer that they line up in mile-long queues at his residence, waiting and begging for palliatives
