Have You Noticed The Sudden Trend Of Big Chickens In Nigeria? by emmy512(op):
December of last year marked the first time I came across a chicken so big and heavy that I had to stop and wonder. It’s not something you typically see around here, and I’d imagine the same goes for other states as well.

Initially, I thought it was just a rare exception when I received two hefty chickens as gifts. They were so massive that I almost doubted they were the regular chickens we’re used to seeing. Each one cost up to ₦28,000 a price far beyond what we’d usually associate with the common poultry we know.

However, my visit to the market recently revealed something surprising. Chickens just as big as the ones I received were everywhere! Stall after stall, it was the same big, heavy birds ready for sale. It got me thinking: why the sudden shift?

Where did all these oversized chickens come from? Why weren’t they as common before the end of 2024?

It’s curious how this trend seemed to pop up almost overnight. Could it be that something new is being used to grow these chickens faster and larger? Were there advancements in poultry farming techniques that suddenly became widespread? Or is this tied to some kind of new feed or growth-enhancing practice that wasn’t used before?

More importantly, should we be concerned about potential health implications? If these chickens are being bred or enhanced in ways we don’t fully understand, could there be side effects for consumers down the line?

I can’t help but wonder if others have noticed this trend too. Does it feel suspicious to you, or do you think it’s simply a result of improved farming practices?

have you encountered these big chickens recently, have you been seeing them often before ending of last year? and do you know what might be causing this sudden boom?

Maybe it's only me that's noticed this

A good observation.

You are proactive. Keep it up.

The world is advancing both negatively and positively. Everything is being maximized and exhausted.

The wise getting wiser.

The fool is getting more foolish.

More discoveries.

Quicker advancements.

Crazier modifications of things.

Faster growth in living things.

Weaker immune systems.

More money for the pharmaceutical industries.

Then, higher death rates.

I have seen chicken that is big, but this one's are bigger.

I won't be worried if it was just my own chicken.
But seeing plenty big chicken in the market just made me suspicious because normally there is no chicken this big at all untill this festive period.

I even thought it was turkey at first when I lifted it up.
Cos the weight, one hand couldn't hold for long

This is envy at its peak. Just because Nigerians are currently fasting involuntarily doesn't mean these innocent creatures should. People with such thoughts must not be allowed to go close to where these chickens are fed especially if they complain of having small peepee or being slim. They might decide to eat everything.

you're already auditioning for a standup comedy walai grin. But don't worry, my concern isn’t about us wanting to join the chicken buffet uninvited. I’m just genuinely curious about what’s making these birds hit the gym while we’re out here fasting involuntarily.
You seem to have insider chicken intel

This chicken weighed 9kg when I went to buy it on 24th Dec. cost me 40k in Lagos. I was in awe of its size that I began to wonder what the rearers feed them. Haven’t seen such a thing before. The picture doesn’t do justice to the actual size of this chicken

Thank you.
This is what I've been looking for.
Someone that actually understands.

The fact we both haven't seen anything like it before is why I am concerned.
I know people use different things to boost their growth but why we're they not boosting it years before untill ending of this year.

I wish I weighed mine, the moment I lifted one with my left arm and it felt too heavy I just thought if this is turkey

Re: Have You Noticed The Sudden Trend Of Big Chickens In Nigeria? by santaclaws:
There's nothing dangerous about big chickens. They are not necessarily GMO or whatever you're thinking. I have a backyard farm in my Lagos home and some of my broilers got really huge, so this is not surprising to me.

Selective breeding alone can explain why some chickens are bigger. If tall humans keep intermarrying for 3 generations, they'd produce giants, naturally.

Don't panic...

Re: Have You Noticed The Sudden Trend Of Big Chickens In Nigeria? by alanto: 4:40pm On Jan 02, 2025
Na so I see am o. Bought two chickens and they both seem oversized. Though they're broilers. I guess the issue is people don't have money to buy chicken like in the years past. So for the seller the chicken gets older and bigger. The one cockrel I bought last year. Never see anything like it until I jam the two broilers I used this year.
