Is It True That Short People Are Always Stubborn? by Nnamdipapa(op): 3:57am On Jan 05, 2025
Is It True That Short People Are Always Stubborn?

There’s this saying in Nigeria that "na small pepper dey hot pass." It reflects a widespread belief that short people are inherently stubborn or feisty. But is there any truth to this claim, or is it just one of those playful stereotypes Nigerians love to throw around and slap on people?

In Nigeria's cultural context, we thrive on humor and banter. Many of our stereotypes come from lived experiences, observations, and outright exaggerations. The idea that short people are stubborn could stem from the way they’ve been perceived to compensate for their lack of height in a society where "tall" is often equated with leadership or authority.

Short people in Nigeria often develop big personalities to avoid being overshadowed—literally and figuratively. They’re the ones you’ll find arguing loudly in bus parks, defending their positions fiercely at family meetings, or taking leadership roles in unexpected places.

Stubbornness in this context could mean determination, resilience, or simply not taking nonsense from anyone. Many short Nigerians have grown up being teased or underestimated because of their height. This can lead to a natural tendency to assert themselves, proving that "size no be problem."
Consider successful Nigerians who’ve been described as stubborn (in a good way) due to their drive. Isn’t this "stubbornness" simply a trait of people who refuse to let societal biases define them?

Looking at science, researchers suggest that people with perceived disadvantages, such as height, often overcompensate by being more assertive or dominant. However, these are generalizations. Personality is shaped more by upbringing, environment, and experiences than by height.
On the flip side, we know some tall people can be stubborn also. Nigerians will always say, “Everybody get their own wahala.” Stubbornness is not exclusive to short people; it’s a human trait. Some of the most rigid people you’ll meet are tall, quiet, and unyielding.

While it’s fun to joke about these stereotypes, let’s remember that they don’t define anyone. Not all short people are stubborn, just like not all tall people are gentle. Nigerians, regardless of height, are known for their resilience, wit, and ability to thrive in adversity.

So, what is your experience with short people especially the "Maltina bottle" guys?

Every thing they say about short people is true. Because of thier height, they are far from God and close to the devil. Their hearts are turned back and made of stone. Short people lack empathy of any sort. Stubborn, heartless, ruthless and possess no human feeling at all.

They have natural psychopathic tendencies. Does the name Adams Oshiomole, Nasir el-rufai and nuhu ribadu ring a bell? You saw what they did when in power.

Do not be unfortunate to date or marry a short woman. You will surely regret it. In my next life, when it is time to reincarnate and I find out that their will still be short people in this world, I'll choose to stay dead.

The difference between children on Nairaland and illiterates is that children here can write. Both parties are equally ignorant. During NYSC service, I was shocked to hear a graduate comment “why is a woman tall and lean while her blood brother is short and burly? Are you sure they are siblings?” Two days ago on Nairaland, a child who I assume passed JSCE commented that baboons are apes and are closely linked to humans. All the ChatGPT, MetaAI and the likes easily accessible on phones haven’t dented the rate of ignorance in this forum or the country as a whole.

So, what is your experience with short people especially the "Maltina bottle" guys?
Haha, the "Maltina bottle" guys! I love how playful and humorous Nigerians are when it comes to stereotypes, and it’s clear that the whole idea of short people being stubborn is one of those things that gets exaggerated for comedic effect. I mean, it’s true that people often develop big personalities when they feel overlooked or underestimated, and it seems like short people might lean into that more—whether it’s being assertive in a heated discussion or leading the charge in unexpected situations.

But is it really about being stubborn? Or is it more about proving that size isn’t the deciding factor in strength, leadership, or determination? There’s a fine line between being perceived as stubborn and being fiercely determined. And, as you pointed out, some of the most successful Nigerians—regardless of height—are probably more about resilience and fighting against the odds than they are about being "stubborn" in a negative sense.

It’s all about context, right? We all have our quirks, and "stubbornness" might just be a way to describe someone who doesn’t let anyone walk all over them—whether they’re short, tall, or somewhere in between! At the end of the day, it's not about height, but the character someone brings to the table. Everyone has their own unique traits, and that’s what makes people interesting. So, no, not all short people are stubborn, just like not all tall people are gentle—just different personalities at play!

It's a myth.. People sometimes take an advantage on short people and when they respond cleverly, people would say they are stubborn.

Not tolerating shits can't be regarded as being stubborn

Perhaps being tall is automatically being smart
