China is now a country where a high-school handyman has a master's degree in physics; a cleaner is qualified in environmental planning; a delivery driver studied philosophy, and a PhD graduate from the prestigious Tsinghua University ends up applying to work as an auxiliary police officer.

These are real cases in a struggling economy - and it is not hard to find more like them.

"My dream job was to work in investment banking," says Sun Zhan as he prepares to start his shift as a waiter in a hot pot restaurant in the southern city of Nanjing.

The 25-year-old recently graduated with a master's degree in finance. He was hoping to "make a lot of money" in a high-paying role but adds, "I looked for such a job, with no good results".

China is churning out millions of university graduates every year but, in some fields, there just aren't enough jobs for them.

This is the downside of over education
I predict that this will happen in Nigeria in 40-50 years.

Right now, every shop attendant/driver/security has O level in Nigeria unlike before when it was enough for a secretarial/clerk job. Almost everyone now has a HND/B.Sc and in 15 years time, B.Sc will be basic requirement for shop attendant/driver/security.

In 40-50 years, it will be the turn of Masters degree.

It's better to have more educated and skilled labour force than to have illiterates and unskilled labour force.

High illiteracy and unskilled labor force breeds insecurity, poverty, unproductivity, unemployment etc.

China is doing well. They can export their human resources.

Already happening in Nigeria long time ago. Lack of required job leads professionals to availability. Just any available jobs especially for the desperate ones.

One of the ills of overdevelopment, there'll be too much qualified people than the system can accommodate. This might further bring down the labour cost and on the long run dissuade people from pursuing more technical knowledge since the reward for such is dwindling. Except they have other regions to migrate to, to put their knowledge to better use with appropriate reward.

The chicken has finally come home to roost. This here is the saturation point in the global job market with China being a case study. New skills are needed perhaps in the financial literacy space to mitigate the unintended consequences of rapid global population growth.

The current model of "go to a brick-and-mortar school, graduate, get a job and earn a salary" is simply NOT sustainable anymore in the world. Despite China's rapid economic and technological successes (since 1980 when the Chinese folks still rode bicycles around and lived largely rural lives till this moment in time and space) enough corporate jobs CANNOT be created for all. The signs have been there as far back as the 1990s leading right into the 2000s.
