What Are The Benefits Of Tribalism In Politics?? by Sermwell(op): 12:06pm On Jan 06, 2025
I really want to know how tribalism benefits the masses in politics. We have had persons from different tribes become president but this has not in anyway better the lives of the 'common man' from same tribe as the president.
For instance, after the return to democracy in 1999, Obasanjo and Tinubu have become president, but I can't see how that is benefitting the masses in the south west. Katsina state is now filed with IDP camps, villages ransacked, village heads kidnapped just when Buhari became president. When Jonathan became president,..."Even road to Otueke no dey".. Which means Jonathan's presidency didn't benefit the masses from Bayelsa. I am quite sure that if an igbo man becomes president tomorrow, it will still not benefit the masses from the East.

Maybe I am the only one who's not seeing how tribalism in politics benefits the masses. I really want to know how who becomes president from a particular tribe benefits the masses from same tribe.

HOW DO YOU THINK TRIBALISM IN POLITICS BENEFITS THE MASSES??

NB: Please let's be objective in our comments devoid of tribalism. Thanks.

That's the only way most of the unqualified and vision less political office holders could have gotten into power. So it is beneficial to those ones

The most foolish people on earth are tribalists here who doesn't fall into the above sect

You are ill-informed
Go and read this book "The Prince" by Niccolo Machiavelli and come back here to edit this crap

There are no correlations between being visionless and using tribalism as a tool

Being visionless is more about poor leadership skill and horrible administrative power. Its about a person. You either have it or not

Tribalism is just a political tool to grab powers. Its just a tool that can be used by anyone, smart or dumb

Are you saying tribalism doesn't benefit the masses but those who want to be in power?

Do you think that railway to Niger republic would have been a reality if Muhammadu is not the president.
Do you also think that Lagos to Calabar high way would have been a reality if DRUGGIE is not the president? So without tribalism no region would benefit from the federal government.

How do you define benefit?

How does wearing clothes benefit you? You might say it covers up your body and keep you warm - but a wrapper or a blanket can do that job too and maybe a better one.

1. Having a President from your tribe is a status symbol, it can bring respect and recognition to that tribe
2. It can create connections and improvements in government positions
3. It can also be a source of inspiration/role model to members of that tribe

It doesn't always need to have material benefits

Again the word benefit is highly subjective

It does not benefit anybody.........Any politician that wants progress should be doing the exact opposite of tribalism.....he should engage in detribalised politics! MKO Abiola actually won the 1983 elections in Anambra state......and garnered 45% of total southeast votes.........whoever advised APC to go full code red on ndigbo in Lagos did themselves a world of disservice! It will come back to hunt yorubas at a later date!

Tinubu is beginning to get sense small small.........Instead of using near useless proxies like uzodimma and Joe igbokwe, He should send his son to push a true reconciliation and reconstruction of southeast infrastructure............package am as a Tinubu initiative and igbos will align naturally to his regime, complete and commission the new international terminal in Enugu airport, complete the raillline between port harcourt and enugu, and make onne port truly functional by removing all restrictions on what you can bring thru the port...infact go ahead and construct a RORO terminal at the port....................2027 will be guaranteed for him and APC ! and of course release Kanu!

Igbos are the ones to answer this question..

They were the only region that voted based on tribalism in the last election..

I don't think this is true! In this country, the igbos have massively voted for Hausas ( Yaradua,Atiku), voted massively for Yorubas (MKO, Obasanjo), even voted against Ojukwu

2023 was the only time they voted for an igbo man.

Now tell when in the history of this country have the Hausas or Yorubas voted massively for an igbo man to be president?

Did Ojukwu contested for Nigeria president?

You lied about Abiola but that’s not even the case..

My statement is, in the last election, Igbos voted based on tribalism. How do you suddenly called somebody a failure and a bad omen, and all of a sudden, you changed mouth because of tribalism…. Iniit?

Then if you saying Igbos didn’t vote based on tribalism, which part of Nigeria voted based on tribalism that made you created a topic to ask what you’re asking..?

Everybody voted on tribalism, and that's why I am asking the it's benefits. You were making sound as though only a region voted base on tribe!

Yes, it’s only a region. It’s not true that everybody voted based on tribalism..

The SW has never voted based on tribalism..

Even in the last election, despite that Tinubu is from the west, he didn’t get up to 50% votes. The votes were all shared among the major contestants. In the north, northerners shared their votes between Tinubu & Atiku majorly..

But the Igbo own different. Nah 99% votes dem carry give Obi… What’s that to you if not for tribalism?

You think if the west voted based on tribalism, Obi and Atiku would have won any state in the west?

You think if the north voted based on tribalism, tinubu would have won any state in the north?

The truth is out there. The records are there… Except you’re just ashamed of telling the truth!

Tribalism, religiosity, ethnicity and regionalism are all tools used by the Elites. They brainwash the poor using any of those tools above to gain the votes after which the same poor face the consequences. So what I'm trying to say in essence is that those things have no benefits to the poor masses except the Elites.
