The recent tax reform proposals in Nigeria have sparked controversy, particularly among northerners. Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, has been at the forefront of these reforms. According to Oyedele, the current Value Added Tax (VAT) structure can be retained if that's what the people want, despite the initial proposal to reform it. The tax reform bills, introduced by President Bola Tinubu, aim to overhaul Nigeria's tax system, consolidating existing tax laws, streamlining tax administration, and enhancing revenue generation. However, the proposals have faced resistance from various groups, who argue that they would favor one section of the country over others. Oyedele has emphasized that the reforms are necessary to address the country's "revenue crisis" and increase government revenues from 10% to 18% of GDP. He believes that the reforms would be transformative not just for Nigeria but for Africa as a whole. Despite the challenges, Oyedele remains committed to the reform process, engaging with stakeholders, and canvassing views from various sectors of society. He acknowledges that building trust between the government and the people is crucial, especially given the low levels of public trust in the tax system. |

Oyedele in 2019...... kicked against VAT, when Buhari wanted to make tax reforms, saying it will fuel inflation and make people poorer.... And, in a most arrogant display of hypocrisy, Same Oyedele in 2025.....after getting appointment in his kinsman govt, suddenly feels VAT & Tax reforms is the best thing after gbegiri & Amala garnished with orishirishi..... what a people! Humans without integrity! When the are outside Govt they speak with front mouth, when in gotv they speak with side mouth! Heather hey are cleric ohhh, legal professors ohh or lowlife agberos, n the same thing!

THe Tax Reform Bill is a welcome development, Soon to be passed i hope.Every Region has what it takes. For example the North has a lot, i mean a lot of land, it can be a tremendous source of income if utilized wisely. So many opportunities if people just focus inwards not stretching the neck outwards. It is the right thing to do. |

In classification economic parasites like some people from SW are now calling Northern states, I think 70% of states in Nigeria are parasites then... For instances, Ekiti, osun, Oyo are all states that will fizzle out once allocation from Abuja stops. Now, if proper tax reforms are made, the North will be the biggest beneficiaries as 90% of food items comes from there. if Asiwaju is sincere, he can add Agricultural tax bills too......Every grain, fruits or tuber that comes from the Nortth can be tax.... yes, Nigerians are already paying tax without knowing. I have first hand seen how much agriculture brings Netherlands in a year...more than what Oil & gas brings Nigeria in 3 years. Those egunje truck drivers pay corrupt soldiers & policemen on the road before these foods are brought are tax collected unofficially.... These are also passed across to the consumers during price planning. If you want serious, dey serious. we all saw the foolishness of Buhari quest to build railway to Niger when all hook & crony of Nigeria are not already linked up. Where is Ameachi explaining the nonsense then? In the dustbin of history! Make it official and see North become the richest region within five years! A tax reform that favors only your state or region is wickedness wrapped in a beautiful & attraction covers! Say No to Asiwaju tax reform without accompanying, and immediate Agricultural & Shipping reforms! I am sure most Igbos will floc North in Agro ventures... ![]() |

Deepthoughts:From what I know of the bill, let me give you my own explanation. VAT is tax paid on finished goods/services that reach the final consumer (e.g. turkey eventually consumed, hotel bills eventually settled, construction materials eventually used), it is based on 15% of retail price. Some add it to the price that final consumers are to see and so on. Final consumers then pay the retail price plus that tax. Normally, this tax is to be remitted by the retailer. However, in Nigeria, because of some acute lack of organization in its part, it is even remitted by the manufacturers/distributors. And because of that, VAT is remitted by Lagos State (hq of the manufacturer) instead of in the various states in Nigeria and by the retailers. FG wants to better organize the VAT taxing structure, and at that, wouldn't be collected by FIRS (FG tax collector), but by each state's IRS (each state's tax collectors) instead. And further, rather than FG pooling the VAT tax revenue, and then sharing it to the states using the FAAC sharing formula, FG says the states having collected it by themselves would then take 85% of it and give the FG 15%. This is equitable, right? In almost all countries of the world, sales tax is the state's responsibility. The North opposes it for these: If your state's people are poor, and do not consume plenty things, or expensive items, or luxurious items, your state's VAT revenue would be low. Also, if your state's tax collection is inefficient or sharia no tax-bound, your state's VAT revenue would be low. So, the North believes that their people consume poorly and their VAT would be low compared to if Lagos State or River state share theirs with them for example. Also, they don't collect taxes, except maybe Kano, and even so, little compared to other ever-tax-ready states of the South, so they believe their revenue would be low compared to if the inefficient VAT'ing system still sticks. The FG continues to say that, no, eventually, there'd be benefits to those Northern states inasmuch as they encourage productivity and developments in their states, and in which increases incomes and increase consumption, hence high VAT revenue, but apparently, that seems like death sentence to some of those state's governor. With the above, I hope I have been able to explain the tax reform bill, in the simplest way. And PS: states like Ekiti state in South may also be badly affected by it, and that's the point, each state's government should also work on developments from the grassroot in order for them to reap high state revenues. |

The tax reform if studied well by the Northern region and reviewed with unbiased mentality. It's to their profit and advantages. All those revenue accruing to Lagos and Ogun State alone, being paid by those big corporations at their headquarters in Lagos will automatically be taken away and collected from the point of consumption. Wish their few educated ones can reason rationally.... free2ryhme: |

The northerners' stance on this tax reform bill reminds of my grandma. She raised me from one year old. She brought me up with 'agbo', 'agunmu', 'epa ijebu', 'ogun ile tutu' and so on... All na bitters! Mama never give me anything sweet unless we eating food proper! Heaven was let loose on a faithful day mama wanted to give me honey to lick after I sustained one injury in the leg after riding bicycle with stolen money! Omoh, I no gree collect that thing ooo... It took 4 hefty men to hold me, they persuaded me that it was sweet and not the usual bitters. I no still gree... They tried until they successfully overpowered me, behold! A drop of honey entered my tongue! Guy man body calm down immediately...😄😄 I was ashamed of myself. Everyone started laughing at me. Lesson: It was hard for me to believe that grandma will ever give me anything sweet. Finally, I searched the whole house the next morning until I discovered where mama kept the honey container! Guess what? .......... Also, as beneficial as the tax reform bill would be to the northerners, they won't be so quick to accept it. They will be thinking it was intended to shortchange them as a people. Let's continue to educate and orientate them until they will agree. After all we can't find any 4 hefty interventions to force the reform in their throat! 😁😃😄 Ire ooo.... |
