It's a known fact that Arochukwu belongs to the Akwa Ibomites (Ibibios) right from around 300AD (Originally Obong Okon Ita and Ibom).

Following recurrent disputes with Igbo settlers who migrated to the area in waves, the Arochukwu (Aro) confederacy was established to seek peace in the region in the 1600s. The area was later renamed Arochukwu. Obong Okon Ita was also later corrupted to Obinkita.
