The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has announced plans to increase corps members' monthly allowance to N77,000.

Speaking during the commissioning of a staff bus donated by Capital Express Insurance Company in Abuja, Ahmed revealed that arrangements for the allowance increment have been finalised. He assured corps members that their welfare and security remain a priority, with full implementation expected by 2025.

Currently, NYSC members receive N33,000 monthly, despite the new minimum wage law signed in July 2024. The newly donated bus aims to ease transportation challenges faced by NYSC staff and corps members.

The CEO of Capital Express Insurance, Matthew Ogwezhi, noted that the donation reflects their commitment to supporting the NYSC amid rising transportation costs.

The new minimum wage was signed into law back in July 2024, yet corps members are still stuck at N33,000, even though the government had ample time to factor this into the budget. It does raise questions about the sincerity of the government’s commitment to their welfare. The government needs to do better. If the welfare of corps members is truly a priority, these promises must turn into action
