Director of Operations at Geofocus, Engr. Mutiu Idris has expressed strong confidence in the Lagos-Abuja Super Highway and High-Speed Train projects, emphasising their role in transforming Nigeria’s economy.

With this initiative, he said Nigeria was poised to unlock unprecedented economic potential, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for a prosperous, modern and efficient transportation sector.

According to him, addressing Nigeria’s infrastructure deficits, particularly in road and rail transport, is essential for driving economic growth, wealth creation, and sustainable development in Africa’s largest economy by GDP.

He noted that the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, identified the Lagos-Abuja High-Speed Railway and Super Highway as a key economic driver in 2016 will be led by the AEC-Geofocus consortium.

He said that the Lagos-Abuja corridor, spanning approximately 500 kilometers, will connect Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Kwara, Kogi, and Niger states before reaching Abuja, under a design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Maintain (DBFOM) model.

Idris noted that AEC-Geofocus, a consortium of engineers, planners, and investors, has successfully attracted $16 billion from Middle Eastern investors, with additional interest from European financial institutions and the World Bank.

The financial framework, he explained, was designed to minimise government expenditure, safeguard public funds and prevent cost overruns through an efficient risk-sharing mechanism.

Idris described the high-speed train component as a double-gauge rail line capable of speeds up to 250 km/hr, with two main stations in Lagos and Abuja as well as 11 intermediate stops.

According to him, the bullet train traveling at 250 km/hr, will cut Lagos-Abuja travel time from 10 hours by road to just 3 hours. The Super Highway will reduce travel time to 5 hours.”

He also mentioned that the super highway would feature eight lanes, two service lanes, and 13 tolling points, supporting faster and safer travel between Nigeria’s two key cities.

Beyond transportation, Idris revealed plans for ten smart cities, one million housing units and an independent power plant, positioning the project as a transformative initiative for Africa.

Expressing optimism, he assured stakeholders of a grand project flag-off before February 2025, reiterating AEC-Geofocus’ commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure.

He praised the Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Alkali, for his commitment to transformative infrastructure, underscoring the project’s potential to revolutionise Nigeria’s transportation sector and economy.

Not
Fix
The
Existing
Lagos to Abuja highways

Lagos through ilorin to Abuja is bad road, only some sections are been tarred

Lagos through lokoja is a death trap, the okene-ibilo-owo axis is unmotorable ,many have to take Ekiti tiny roads,

Why not fix them,

Just
Opening chop for padi

Looking forward to this project.

It is totally different from the proposed Standard gauge from Lagos - Ibadan - Abuja built by the Chinese. I guess that project has been abandoned for this Double gauge from Lagos - Abuja by AEC - Geofocus.

This will go a long was to improve transportation, trade, security etc along the corridor. Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Kwara, Kogi and Niger states will benefit significantly from this project.

Akin to Lagos - Calabar Highway and railway project undertaken by HIGHTECH.

Good news to know one can drive down to Lagos within 4 - 5 hours on constant motion. Unlike, the bad roads and insecurity along the route to Lago - Abuja.

If one wants, one can ride on train and get to either Lagos or Abuja within 3 hours. wow.

Did you read before jumping to make comment?

This is a PPP project. Government is not contributing a dime for this project.

However, Ilorin and Lokoja roads have been captured on the budget for this year.

Exactly, private investors should augment in building road and railway infrastructures in the country. This will reduce corruption and wastage of public fund.

The question is not whether the high-speed rail project can be built but whether it can survive the weight of its own unsustainability. Feasibility studies reveal the grim truth: no proposed route is economically viable, as the cost to make it self-sustaining far exceeds what travelers can or will pay.

If the Ajaokuta Steel Mill were operational, we might have had a fighting chance—having its steel on loan to construct the rail tracks, injecting real liquidity into the steel industry, and repaying the debt through freight exchanges. So that the high speed rail can carry steel for Ajaokuta in exchange for the steel used to build the rail tarck .This could have resurrected the steel mill and turned it into a debt-clearing, revenue-generating business.

But as it stands, this project risks becoming another colossal failure—a monument to political mediocrity and reckless ambition. Let it not go the way of Ajaokuta, a perpetual case study in squandered potential and policy disaster.

Apparently, you didn't read or you lack comprehension skill.

Who told you Government is embarking on this project?

This is PPT project, mr man.

Well, you might be among those who claimed Dangote refinery was a failed project.

Lagos to Abuja is not possible in 5hrs except your running like 160kmh non- stop
But I don't understand this route. How will you go from Kogi to Niger before getting to Abuja when both states are direct neighbours with Abuja?
Are you sure that route is possible? And why ministry of transport instead of ministry of works

Note that if this route is feasible which is highly unlikely, it will be longer than this present one

According to your story, the road will transverse both Niger and Kogi states
Meanwhile the present route pass through only Niger
How does it make sense that the route will be shorter then?

There's a route from Lagos through Kogi and Niger. This not the first time hearing about it but if you are oblivion to this, there is no need arguing with you.

The one entering Niger state is still ongoing. That's Kano - Niger

Besides, it has addressed the transportation needs in some areas where you have the train functioning.

Lagos - Ibadan railway

Abuja - Kaduna railway

Itakpe - Warri railway

Port Harcourt - Aba (Portharcourt - Maiduguri still under renovation currently)
