Listen to Ojukwu, Awolowo, Nzeogwu, Aguiyi Ironsi, Cyprian Ekwensi.

The simple truth is that as Nigeria became more decolonized - British accent died with it.

The average Nigerian today is more educated than the average Nigerian pre-1966, the quality of English may have reduced but the quantity has increased.

it's not about specific individuals. All the personalities who worked directly with the British before independence not only had good command of English language but somehow developed British accent. This is true of Balewa and ahmadu Bello but even more evident in Zik, Ojukwu, Gowon etc

The rot started in the military shortly before independence after the federal government headed by the North introduced a quota system for northerners in the junior rank of the army with English language deficiency and was made worse by the counter coup which disrupted the chains of command.
