The lawmaker representing Ife federal
constituency in House of Representatives, Chief
Rotimi Makinde, has said the defeat of Senator
Iyiola Omisore by Governor Rauf Aregbesola in
the August 9 governorship election in the state
has brought Omsiore’s political career to an end.
Omisore, who was the candidate of the Peoples
Democratic Party, garnered 292,747 votes while
Argbesola got 394,684 votes. Also, while Omisore
won in seven local government areas, Aregbesola
won in 23.
Speaking with our correspondent during an
interview, Makinde described the victory as “a
victory over tyranny.”
“This election has sent Omisore to the backseat
of politics. God delivered him into our hands and
we are grateful. Omisore has been retired from
politics and we must seek to develop Ile-Ife with
his retirement.”
Makinde said although Omisore won the four
local government areas in Ife including Ife-East,
Ife-Central, Ife-North and Ife-South local
government councils, the election was not the
true test of his popularity.
He said the outcome of the election was
misleading because most of the members of his
party, the All Progressives Congress, were either
not allowed to vote or were intimidated at the
various polling units in the constituency.
Makinde, who claimed that even he was not
allowed to vote, added that he had to flee the
area because his life was threatened.
The lawmaker, who is also the Deputy Chairman,
House Committee on Human Rights, berated the
Federal Government for using security agents to
harass APC leaders, many of whom were
arrested on the eve of the election.
“People were intimidated and they only gave
breathing space to their own supporters. If me, a
House of Representatives member, who still
holds the mandate of the people of the area,
could not step out of my residence, you can
imagine how many people stepped out. This
victory has sent signals to the PDP and the
Federal Government that the APC remains alive
and that the South-West rejected them,”

Senator Iyiola Omisore won Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa convincingly in the 2003 election, he also won the 2007 election convincingly. Why then didn't he win the same election in 2011 losing to Omoworare?

The fact is that ife zone is Omisore's stronghold. He will need to work very hard to claim it. Not convincingly like you said!

he did not win 2007 convincingly. The election was marred by violence and irregularities and was annuled by the Appeal Court in 2009. However, the AC did not participate in the re-run election opting to wait for 2011. And Omi was defeated in 2011....
