A Nigerian graduate has expressed regret after spending five years at Lagos State University (LASU), only to end up selling zobo. She took to her TikTok page to share her story, explaining how she now works as a zobo vendor to make ends meet. She revealed that she spent half a decade pursuing her education at the university, but ultimately became a zobo seller after graduation. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

“If I had known it would be zobo I’d end up selling, I wouldn’t have wasted 5 years of my life in LASU,” she captioned her post.

Anyway, I have come to learn that, in some cases, the difference between the rich and the poor in Nigeria is just information

If she's under 26, and regardless of her course of study,most banks and auditing firm take in fresh graduates multiple times a year for their Graduate Training program and its based on merit only. Connecting with those in that line would help a great deal and the Entry-level pay is always around 300k- 550k depending on the bank(not a bad start for a 24year old graduate)

Not sure she's aware of that or others sef

You should know getting a job like that is by outstanding merit and strong connection…

Teaching (Primary and Secondary) that fresh graduate's run away from after NYSC which is one of the most looked down on professions in Nigeria because of it's low renumeration is one of the highest paid professions in UAE, Dubai and Middle East in general.

People struggle to become Teachers in these countries just the way people struggle to become Doctors in Nigeria.

Why?

These countries value education and are investing heavily in the education of their future generations.

And they do this by paying their Teachers very well.

Tomorrow you will hear that UAE has taken over USA.

This I see coming.

It's the Country.

Handwork pays much more than bsc whatever. If I had known I should have had a skill before entering the university but unfortunately wasn’t so. After graduation too much pride stopping low to go learn handwork. Our mentality na at least govt. job not even teaching job. Though I dislike teaching and not everyone likes it as well… many years passed, I ended up on handwork. Person for done go far for this life pass this. So unfortunate. When people say school na scam, yes because it doesn’t suit it white collar purposes in Africa. And the competition is more than the available jobs as na third world nations with zero industries & low development & skills.

All University students and current graduates need to read a book called Who Move My Cheese. The purpose of University education system has changed. Hoping for white collar job is obsolete. This generation is blessed with technology pls use to your advantage along with your University education.

That is the problem.

The mindset some of us have...that tradesmen are 'inferior'. This mindset is limiting so many people...and they often realize it only when its too late.

The 'handwork' people are the nuts and bolts that keep the real economy going. Carpenters, mechanics, welders, joiners, pipe fitters, metal workers etc. And don't forget fishermen, farmers, truck drivers etc.

The small group of office workers who get all the attention do not represent the majority of the labour force. Not at all!

This shows she missed the purpose and only wasted her time the possibility of her leveraging on it in future is not guaranteed.

Well she can be creative yeah, that will help here, the government or institutions is no longer responsible for your well being. So you have to act and create your own future.. that is the goal.. spending 5 years, does not mean anything in Nigeria you will just trend for some days, that is the end.. so you have to be useful for yourself and for the society.. yeah..

Thank you my sister. Some cant even speak good English and are very very naive to even apply for a job let alone interview. When they see them doing something they feel will make people think less of them, boom they play the pity card. I am graduate with no job.

Not at all, you have nailed it! Same applicable in overseas countries. Ones you have a handwork of skill as listed above, it’s an express employment. One can never be without work. Unfortunately I realized this too late in life and I had no one to put me through. Education is good, but in addition to skill, one will be in the higher class categories having greater insight. You will feel proud of yourself. Real Boss standards, with enough subjects under you. Real loyals!

Unfortunately, our teachers refuse telling us these things that it’s not all about academics.

Engineering, medicals, law yes, but what about those who do not have the brains for them!

No regrets my dear. With your certificate a hungry dog is better than a dead lion. One day you will use your mouth to profess the benefit of education.

Education is not all about jobs. Is acquiring the basics that will make you think out of box to be a better person or a tool that makes you do things differently.
