My Experience Hunting For A Nigerian Used Car With A Budget Of 4.5M by Brilliant007(op): 6:15am On Jan 10, 2025

I step out of Lagos searching for a reliable camry 2004. I saw many dealers on Jiji and nairaland. I visited each of them with my reliable mechanic.
After checking several cars, we discovered that none of the Nigerian used cars is worth buying .
They always have one problem or the other. The most common is bad engines.

Many dealers even promised to give my mechanic 100k behind my back to convince me to buy this melon car.

It's crazy that with 4.5 million, all you can get is a bad car.
We return home disappointed.

On getting home. I went back to check my own car that I have been driving for 5 years. My engine, gear, and ac are still in perfect condition and I wonder if those putting their car on sale are those with major problem.

Nigeria dealers have ruined the used car market.
Is this a problem with toyota or because the car is a lower year.

I didn't consider other brands. Maybe it would have been a different situation.

At the moment, we are considering buying Tokunbo direct or on installment payment in order to evade this madness in the Nigerian used car Market

No doubt, it's either that mechanic of yours has a good heart or he is a relative .... Most of the mechanic would have sweet mouth a bad car for you to buy inorder to get his own share from the car seller..... This is more reason I advice people who intend to buy a car should try as much as possible to get a tokunbo... All this naija used car are just packaging

Most Toyota cars used here tend to have oil shortage because of the fragility of their engines. To avoid this, one has to change the oil before 5000kilometres, check for signs of oil leakages and possibly replace worn out oil seal.

There are many cleanly used cars out there, just that It's better to inspect cars yourself than going with a dishonest mechanic...

Many car dealers are greedy hence very dishonest.

You will see many of them on Nairaland using phrases like ‘barely driven’, ‘owner’s second car’,
‘everything intact’.

Thereby pricing Naija used cars in the range of Tokunbo, some will rub the car with pomade and wear condoms on the seat to advertise their dead cars.

This is your best bet of getting a Nigeria used car. Although the exterior of the cars may look rough, it is because most of them are first timers, the engines and gearbox is still very ok. A broke yahoo boy + a colos addict will be willing to sell for any price.

If you want to buy a Nigerian used car presently, you need to take your time. Don't buy from any middle man. Those so called dealers are worst than house agent. Some of them add as much as 500k on top wetin the owner dey demand. Look for a friend, a friend's friend or a Yahoo boy trying to sell around you. So you can have an idea of the usage.
All those "car used by a lady" "owner relocating abroad" etc na packaging.
Wetin my eye see when I was trying to "upgrade" by getting a Nigerian used no be small.
Now I don go back to my own car. When I have money I go get a Tokunbo.

Most Nigerians have this bad attitude of not selling their cars unless it has a big problem like
Engine / gear issues
Reoccurring issues or
a problem that they can't seem to figure out

Eeyah. You may try Abuja. But the truth is fairly used cars are very costly these days since imported cars are on the high side! But a car of 2004 is estimatedly 21 years old old! To get a good engine go hard! Just add money and go buy imported Toyota Rav 4 2007. The engine is durable!

95% of people selling their cars is because it's faulty. They've repaired and repaired and are tired of repairing it so they'll just put it up for sale.

That's why I tell people to avoid Nigerian used cars cos na problem you de buy. They money you'll spend in fixing it would exceed the amount you spent in buying it.

Go to apapa those cars coming in from the ship, negotiate with a dealer, pay and carry your car home. You'll use it for up to 2 years before it starts giving you any major issue.

By all means sir, don't put yourself in a position of having at least, five mechanic phone numbers on your phone. Four Milla plus, is so much money to waste on a packaged wahala. Buy tokumbo and have peace of mind
