Distance Learning, Future Of Education – NOUN VC by Fineman2(op): 9:28pm On Jan 11, 2025
Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria, Prof. Olufemi Peters has said Open and Distance Learning represents the future of education globally.

Speaking during the 27th Matriculation Ceremony, held both virtually and physically, at various NOUN study centres nationwide, Peters welcomed the new students and highlighted the transformative potential of ODL in bridging the gap to quality education.

Our mode of education empowers students to learn at their own pace, balancing education with work and family responsibilities,” Peters said. “NOUN is bridging the gap in access to quality higher education, ensuring inclusivity for all Nigerians, regardless of age, location, or circumstance.”

Peters described NOUN’s ODL model as “revolutionary”, particularly in a world increasingly driven by digital innovation and the need for flexible learning systems.

He noted that NOUN stands out from traditional universities by offering unmatched flexibility without compromising on quality, with its programmes rigorously accredited and its graduates highly employable.

The new intake is 18,106 for undergraduate programmes, 5,196 for postgraduate programmes, 10 for MPhil, and 32 for PhD programmes.

“Our model has shown that education can transcend geographical barriers, making learning a right and not a privilege.

“This system proves that educational excellence does not require physical presence in a classroom,” he added.

The Vice-Chancellor further urged the new students to strive for excellence.

“Let this moment be a commitment to not just meet but exceed the standards set before you. NOUN is not just about completing a degree; it’s about transforming lives through education.”

The matriculation ceremony also featured the administration of the matriculation oath by NOUN Registrar, Mr. Oladipo Ajayi, marking the formal induction of the students into the university.

I agree with NOUN VC

But I have a problem with FG regarding NOUN, it seems the federal government isn't doing enough for this school that has been around since early 2000, the largest university in Nigeria in terms of students enrollment, the government is only interested in making money from the students instead of making the school stand out and more attractive.

With the right facilities and infrastructure in place, NOUN students will compete well with their foreign counterparts

What exactly does it take to address all the issues in this great school that government cannot do?

grin High school graduates are also doing well in tech related fields this days, but I bet you won't allow a Doctor that is a product of distance learning to diagnose you.

Even AI can now diagnose patients and do what doctors can do. Arindin! There's no medicine in distance learning for now undecided . You are just one of the many educated illiterate in Nigeria. And Robotics is the feature of medicine & surgery, you better wakeup.

The bolded should have been your response alone, but you couldn't resist exhibiting gutter behaviour, I wonder who the educated illiterate is now. And when next you are down with illness, you should subscribe to o3, Ode.

Distance learning is good,if Transparency is involved but has so much limitations, compared to Normal Classrooms, where Practical applications are involved.e.g Medicine, Engineering,Bio- Technology, etc. We must know Our Limitations.

nice one. a friend of mine finished from NOUN also.

Next 40 years physcial classroom will exist, it is an imprint of human social value. It won’t be Much as 99% in the past but it will keep existing even more than 80% of use cases.

Even work place of most advance country still practices come to office.

What is very practical is Dual mode. That is what is most adopted today. You may ask why?

Some part of education just needs physcial interactions

Nothing about advance though.
What is correct is our tech of today is not yet advance to outmatch what physical interaction brings to the table.

To start with not in a country like Nigeria

It's advanced enough to learn the needed skills. My nephew graduated with a degree in industrial chemistry. He's now a full stack software engineer at Etisalat. He learnt everything online. YouTube, Udemy, Alison etc.

However, you can't become a certified doctor by learning online. You can't learn how to make a vehicle or hard ware computers online. You have to be physically present to learn these skills that's why I specifically mentioned Medical sciences and advanced engineering.
