The story appears to be oju kokoro busted - the man amended some of his records to lower his age so he would delay his mandatory retirement.

Oh…. grin

He wants to be collecting government salary till old age . Good riddance of bad rubbish ; they should try him in court and retrieve all the salary he has collected behind his original retirement date

I don't think the carer job is the issue, rather it is the Nigerians who own care agencies that provide immigrant care workers to the care homes in the UK.

According to my guy, he said these Nigerian-owned agencies may give out 10 COS to different Nigerians knowing fully well that the requests they have from their principal may just be for 4 workers for the meantime. So they bring in 10 people whom they sell COS to, fix 4 people and keep promising the remaining 6 people shift . When u start getting frustrated, they will advise u to look for any other agency that is willing to give u free COS so they can swap their COS.

More like they only helped u to get into the country with a care visa and then leave u stranded to start hustling for job which they ought to provide for u.

It gets worse. My guy shared a video with me; In that video a man who happens to be one of the Nigerians selling COS was having a video call meeting with the people he brought in. The man said he wants to break a news to them before they start hearing about it outside. Home office has revoked his license and by virtue of that everyone he brought in are at risk of being returned to Nigeria unless they get a job that comes with sponsorship within few days (I can't remember if it was 30 days or 60 days).

If u see the way all of them were shocked and scared because they paid as much 10k, 12k for the COS; some had to sell properties at home to buy the COS. Meanwhile this man just delivered the news to them without any remorse. In the video they were asking him what will happen now? He said they should allow him sleep first jare that tomorrow morning he will get back to them , but he advise them to start looking for jobs and telling anybody they know that they need jobs with sponsorship.

Nigerians wey dey tey for that una UK get mind gan o, dem just dey run people street with strong eye

Probably new immigration law that created openings for foreign care workers changed in the last 4yrs which Nigerians pounced on

Same thing the uptick in Naija student applicants when the UK reversed the laws on work after studies (I believe around 2011 UK changed laws that encouraged foreign grads to stay and work which led to a reduction in UK education seeking students)

I think it was 2021 after COVID-19 they opened the care visa route where u will get a 3 year Visa and u will work for the agency that gives u COS all through that period before u will renew same.

That must be right. But I wonder whether UK people been dey do that work 4 years ago and for what pay

It could be they reduced the pay for care workers while opening immigration floodgates and pricing out UK citizens. . . .or disabled people got legislated better packages of care. . . .or there was a significant increase in the no of disabled people just 4 years ago.

I no dey take notice of disabled people for street back then, maybe they were on the street, but I started noticing when I always saw Nigerians escorting them. If I stand outside on my driveway for half a day, I must see 5 disabled people chaperoned by 10 Nigerians walk by these days

Blueraydick might be up to something, Maybe there was a projected shortage of care workers due to covid burnout or more people got sick in covid times and needed more care workers to help

What you are now seeing is evidence that the healthcare system in the UK is now overwhelmed, I dare say at the brink of collapse and the government is trying to manage critical and skilled care away from skilled settings like hospitals and nursing homes because they are full. The UK has the single payer system/ universal health coverage which is fulfilled by the government through the NHS; in simple terms free health care.

Spike changes in immigration patterns, public health crises like COVID, population dynamics (this affects levels of acuity) have put a huge strain on the universal health/ single payer system the UK has, so they are struggling with resources not limited to finances, personnel and facilities. This is going to need a holistic change in how the UK sees healthcare. The level of acuity for those in the wheel chair may be high and that is why they need 2 caregivers, especially if they are unable to self-transfer out of the wheel chair.

Is this a failure of the single payer system? Or what lessons can be learnt from it, If you are right that the Healthcare system in the UK might be on the brink of collapse. Is it an ageing population More users of the system and not enough young people who pay into it but dont use as much

I know an event like covid can spike the use of Public Healthcare

Na your profession be this na, I trust you.

But most of the chaperoning I'm seeing is for non-verbal autistic people with full walking capability, not for physically impaired per se, although that one follow. I believe change in acuity levels may be the main driver, from 1:1 to 2:1 care.

UK needs to move away from single payer system ASAP, to a more German style system. I done comot their system since, when they mistriaged me (sent me away) for a meniscus tear from A&E after a football injury where my knee was swollen to twice the size. 10 years later, the cartilage finally ground down to zero and I had to have 2 knee surgeries through my private insurance just to be able to run again. First microfracture failed so they put rubber in between the joint on the 2nd surgery. That said, NHS has fixed my broken leg before, although I'm sure any Naija teaching hospital would have done the same.

Good questions Dayo.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a failure, I'd rather refer to it as a major disadvantage of the single payer system in comparison to a multi-system like the US. Canada is another country that has the single payer and they are now struggling with it but nothing like the UK. Other disadvantages are long wait times to get care, abuse of care needs, high taxes and others. It doesn't look like the UK planned well for the changes in critical dynamics like population, effects of post-public health crises, immigration and cost of healthcare. I saw a troubling report the other day about the number of people in the UK who are not getting proper care in primary care settings because it is overwhelmed.

Speaking of COVID, remember, public health crisis have long-term post recovery effects. While the long-term health effects do not necessarily require hospitalization, or care in a skilled setting, they may require ongoing management of those effects, especially if the patient had pre-existing conditions and are older. We have a lot of people who prior to COVID did not have breathing issues but post COVID now require oxygen or have some sort of respiratory issue.

Ageing is only one part of the issue but I can't speak conclusively about it without reviewing critical population data and the working population of the UK. However, it does seem like the aging population who most likely have the higher acuity (care needs) can't enjoy their contribution to the system.

The UK needs to prioritize because they are sitting on a dangerous situation that may trigger an internal public health crises.

You'd read in my response to Dayo that another disadvantage of the single payer system is the abuse of care because it is free. Another, like in your case, haste to care which leads to misdiagnoses because your providers (physicians) have a long waitlist of patients they have to see each day.

Truth is, there are way too many critical uncontrollable (aging, immigration, economy, public health) factors putting pressure on the single payer system.

A retired AOC who spoke to Vanguard correspondent said,

“NGOs are deeply involved in this arms inflow. They have ulterior motives here. They deceive us with mosquito nets, donate insecticides and give us some dollars to support infrastructure but make millions of dollars from arms sales, mineral resources export etc. And most of the weapons are sold very cheap to terrorists and bandits, as cheap as $5, $8, $10."

Alot of carers died during covid, the older care workers also quit in large numbers. The sector needed people, and it never appealed to people due to low pay and being perceived as butt cleaning jobs, in the 90's even early 2000's lots of illegal immigrants would work in that sector just like doing cleaning jobs before regularising their documents . The Cos path to being legal and being able to come with your family was a game changer for many...

Zimbabweans, Ghanaians & Indians abused it, just that Naija took it to another level...
