Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is not permissible to lie to the children as it is not permissible to lie to other people. It might be that lying to the children is even more harmful on their cultivation and upbringing. This is why the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam (may Allaah exalt his mention) said: "Whoever says to a child: "Come and take this.", and doesn’t give him anything, it is considered as (one) lie." [Ahmad] Furthermore, Um Kalthoom Bint ‘Uqbah may Allaah be pleased with her said: "I did not hear the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam (may Allaah exalt his mention) permitting lies for people except in three cases: in war, in reconciling between people, and when a man speaks to his wife or when a wife speaks to her husband (in certain situations)." [Muslim]. Therefore, lying to the children is like lying to other people, so a Muslim should shun this and he may use Tawriyah instead (to say something which has more than one meaning and which the listener is likely to understand a different meaning than what the listener said). Of course, the father did not intend the real meaning of the word he said to his children, but this gets the children accustomed to lying, and this teaches them to lie. Hence it's better avoided!

Al-Ghazali wrote in his The Revival of the Religious Sciences:

Ibn Sa'd, in his book al-Tabaqat al-Kubra, narrates on the authority of Ibn Sirin:

The Prophet (S) saw 'Ammar Ibn Yasir (ra) crying, so he (S) wiped off his (ra) tears, and said: "The nonbelievers arrested you and immersed you in water until you said such and such (i.e., bad-mouthing the Prophet (S) and praising the pagan gods to escape persecution); if they come back, then say it again."



Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, in his book al-Ashbah Wa al-Naza'ir, affirms that:

It is acceptable (for a Muslim) to eat the meat of a dead animal at a time of great hunger (starvation to the extent that the stomach is devoid of all food); and to loosen a bite of food (for fear of choking to death) by alcohol; and to utter words of unbelief; and if one is living in an environment where evil and corruption are the pervasive norm, and permissible things (Halal) are the exception and a rarity, then one can use whatever is available to fulfill his needs.



Abd Ibn Hameed, on the authority of al-Hassan, said: "al-Taqiyya is permissible until the Day of Judgment."

The practice of taqiyya is not limited to any one sect within Islam. It is observed and referenced in Sunni texts of law, hadith collections, and Quranic exegesis. Although historically more extensively practiced and referenced by Shii Muslims, taqiyya is doctrinally available to Sunni Muslims as well. This challenges the negative notion that taqiyya is exclusively associated with one community or confined to a specific group.
