EFCC PRESS STATEMENT

EFCC Condemns False Narratives on Loss of Officer

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, expresses grief on the loss of one of its officers, Assistant Superintendent of the EFCC, ASE II Aminu Sahabi Salisu who was killed in cold blood while on a legitimate duty on January 17, 2025 by a suspected internet fraudster,  Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu.

Additionally, the Commission views with great concern the irresponsible,  callous, inhuman and outrageous narratives being circulated on social media on the whys and wherefores of the fatal accident. It is heinous to reduce the death of a gallant officer who was carrying out patriotic and official duties to social media razzmatazz.

More worrisome is the fact that some faceless commentators are pitching their tents with an alleged criminal who unleashed terror on officers of the EFCC in their line of duty. There is no justification whatsoever to rationalise a murderous act. The milk of human kindness demands that a grieving family, Commission and nation should be spared the shenanigans of false narratives and conjectures on the death of the slain officer.

Salisu, alongside other investigators of the EFCC, were at Dr. J.O. Ukwutinife Close, Ifite, Awka,  Anambra State, to arrest some suspected internet fraudsters in the early hours of January 17. The operation was duly documented at the Anambra State Command Headquarters and Area Command of the Nigeria Police in line with operational protocols.

The operation was initially smooth sailing with 37 suspected internet fraudsters already arrested at a two-storey building housing Ikechukwu and other occupants of the house.

However, Ikechukwu, who sighted the investigators through a CCTV Camera mounted at his doorpost and who also confessed sighting them,  declined to open his door for the investigators who politely demanded entrance to his apartment. Defying all the introduction and physical sighting of the investigators, he resorted to firing shots at them and killed Salisu in the process and wounded another officer detailed to conduct a search in his apartment.

Preliminary investigations showed that Ikechukwu was involved in coding and online medical supplies of doubtful legitimacy. Two laptops, ipads, several recording devices were recovered from his apartment and his involvement in internet fraud is already established. Though currently in police custody owing to the murderous dimension of his case, the Commission will surely bring him to trial.

The EFCC also wishes to alert the public that the activities of internet fraudsters are becoming patently hazardous to public safety and security. Intelligence has shown that these criminals are carrying arms, involved in kidnapping, banditry, ritual killings and other deadly acts.  The public should not fold its arms or allow itself to be deceived that they are mere “Yahoo boys and girls”.

As for the EFCC, every subsequent attack on any of its officers will be met with the force of the law. The Commission will not fold its arms and allow any of its officers to be killed again in cold blood. As a law enforcement agency of repute, the EFCC is unrelenting in riding the nation of  internet fraud and other acts of corruption.

While mourning the loss of its officer who paid the supreme price in the service of the nation, the Commission appreciates the invaluable support, condolences and prompt response of sister agencies and well-meaning individuals standing shoulder to shoulder with it at this trying time.

So with all the annual budget for security they can't equip security operatives with bullet proof vests?

What a country!

When you see Israeli police/soldiers to join force go hungry you.
Re: EFCC mourns Operative, Salisu Sahabi Killed In Awka Raid, Names Suspect by Dogalmighty17:
The questions EFCC needs to answer
1. Was there a directive last year from the commissions headquarters banning mid night raids by the agents of the commission? If there was why were its operatives engaged in such an operation again in clear disregard of a directive that the EFCC had publicly and widely made available?

2. Did its officers break down the door of the medical doctor so as to gain forceful entry into his apartment or not?

3. Was a warrant at anytime issued for the medical doctors arrest? Was he invited to the commissions office? The EFCC extends invitations to political office holders from time to time and a number of them have ignored such invitations. Does the EFCC go about breaking down their doors to enforce arrest? Yahaya Bello comes to mind. He ignored EFCC's invitation for months endlessly. Why was there no commando-like operation to arrest him at any time?

4. If reasonable ground exists to suspect someone of a financial crime, did the EFCC go to a judge to get a warrant? Or is the organisation so lacking in competence that it can't properly mount surveillance on a target and have that target arrested in day time? Why must barging into peoples homes at night be the default method the commission prefers?

The EFCC has lost public support and it will be hard-pressed to find anyone sympathetic to its position on this matter.

You can't be going to people house around 3am in the morning and expect corporation.

They better review their system before they loose more officers.

With due respect to the dead let’s also call the EFCC out for the robbery and corruption that pervades that agency, breaking into peoples house in the night under whatever guise is unacceptable.

If you foolishly break into someone's house by 1am anything you see you collect.

You said the guy is a doctor why not gather intelligence and arrest him at his place of work, then he'll lead you to his house for further search.

Why break into a house in the middle of the night and then try to justify your actions. Most especially in a volitile place like Anambra where kidnapping is on the steady rise.

Abeg that officer killed himself.

The innocent shooter must have mistaken them for kidnappers

If you conduct an analysis into EFCC you will find out all staffs there are aboki and ewedu people.

However, I am not in support of internet frauds. But there should be more professional ways EFCC should conduct themselves

No need to compare with Israel. The operation was illegal, they want to quickly cash out from the fraudsters so they didn't go with their complete kits. Police lie alot

The Northern officers in EFCC see Southern youths as cash cows. They bribe their way to be transfered to the South.

This is why body cams are required in special operations such as these to take down criminals and for recording crime scene evidence. Justice must be served regardless.

All the way from Sokoto to Anambra to break into people's homes at wee and unholy hours of the night like thieves and armed robbers. While politicians who stole away the future of this country are being invited respectfully during the day for questioning.

What was he expecting? The owner of the house will defend his home by any means necessary. It's called self defense and self defense is not a crime.

Let him get a good lawyer to prosecute his case.
EFCC could have invited him over if they had something on him and all this nonsense armed robber style of arrest and subsequent death of this officer would have been averted.

He was an armed robber, and he deserves that

Efcc as an entity sent out a press release saying night sting operations have been banned, so what were the three operatives doing in the mans house 3am in the morninghuh

With the insecurity going on everywhere in Nigeria, you break into a mans house without prior notice and or search warrant in the dead of the night and you expected him not to nak you shots, dey play.

If you have the money for licensed short gun, abobi get one for self defense abeg, these efcc operatives and police officers will sit tight if this incident happens couple of times.

The said man they raided wasn't even a "Yahoo boy" so what were they doing there exactly if not to steal

EFCC going for a midnight operation raises serious questions, especially after their 2023 ban on nighttime sting operations. Did the officers forcefully break down the doctor’s door? Was there a warrant for his arrest? These are key points that need clarity. Plus, how do you send operatives into such dangerous situations without basic protective gear like bulletproof vests? It’s troubling to see such lapses in planning and execution, which ultimately led to a tragic loss of life.
