Maibasira Mourns Lives Lost In Dikko, Niger State Tanker Explosion" by ochejoseph(op): 5:04pm On Jan 20, 2025
The former National Financial Secretary of the People Democratic party Hon Abdullahi Hussaini Maibasira has expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives and injuries that occurred following the January 18th 2025 fuel tanker explosion at Dikko, Niger state.

In a condolence message personally signed by him, the Niger State born party stalwart wrote;

It is with shock, deep sadness and troubling awe that I can barely find words to express my condolences and genuine sympathy.

This is a tragedy that is heartbreaking, unfortunate and painful on a monumental scale.

Official counts indicate that the explosion led to at least 98 fatalities with another minimum of 50 people suffering from “severe burns from the explosion”. This news is devastating and truly tragic.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to the government of Niger State, the families of those who lost their loved ones and the general population of the Dikko community in Gurara Local Government Area in particular. May Allah SWT grant their souls eternal rest. Amin. Our thoughts, hearts and prayers are with the affected families and for the quick recovery of those who sustained injuries.

As we mourn our brethren and sympathize with our injured, we are reminded of the obvious necessity for strict action on road traffic and road safety.

This latest incident is a sad reminder of the multi-faceted social and security problems that our communities face in the face of the rising tide in vehicular traffic of heavy duty vehicles.

May God Almighty continue to provide succor for all those who are affected. Amin

Once I hear say tanker with petrol don fall near my side, I dey immediately leave the place till the tanker is removed completely from the place.

What will prompt someone to go and scoop fuel from a fallen tanker is not poverty but greed

And for those who had businesses around that area and refused to quickly close their shops till the disaster occurred toh, I don't know what to say to una.

Lastly my pity goes to innocent motorists, passers-by who were caught unaware in such mess, may your souls rest in perfect peace cry

Sad to see that more lives have been lost to the same idiocy that led to the unfortunate Jesse fire disaster in Delta state over a decade ago.

How can anyone choose to be around a tanker of fuel or burst pipeline, not to speak of going to scoop petrol?!!

This is beyond poverty... This sort of reckless disregard for personal health and safety is just weird.

Just like the avoidable stampede in Ibadan.

Our people really need to think about this scooping from oil tankers when they fall
It’s very very dangerous ! But people won’t learn !! Can you imagine the number of lives lost just because of how many gallon of fuel they want to scoop ?

It is never about poverty. It is our culture of see 'awuf'.
They will still do the same thing again when a tanker carrying fuel falls in that same place even if it happens today.

Those that say 'awful dey run belle' dem no lie.

This people will never learn.
Re: Maibasira Mourns Lives Lost In Dikko, Niger State Tanker Explosion" by Obaofaba:
I was there when it happened.

Yes people were scooping fuel but that is not what led to the explosion.

After the accident that led to the tanker fall, the driver or maybe the company brought another fuel tanker to transfer the fuel to the other tanker brought.

They were using a generator powered pump, the generator at some points became heated and a drop of fuel on led to the explosion and killing scoopers who were fetching in a drainage filled with fuel.

No police man was present before the explosion, it took fire service about 6 hours after the explosion to arrive, they possibly will have stayed longer but the governor was on his way to Sabon-Wuse in tafa local government, a community bordering diko where the accident ocurred and the governor has to pass through that route, I learnt he ordered the fire service to the scene and road safety officials including the army who later controlled the traffic.

There were two fueling stations close by and it took God's grace for them not to be engulfed by the inferno.

More than 200 people lost their lives and some more are still dying or in critical condition.

It's not that people brought generator to scoope fuel but the company does that to minimise lost but it backfired.

The correct spelling of the community is DIKO not Dikko. We appreciate the honourable for his condolences and prayers, we pray such event doesn't reoccurred again to any community in Nigeria.
