A Cry For Justice: My Sister’s Peculiar Case At FUTA Hello everyone, I’m writing this with a heavy heart, hoping to get some advice or raise awareness about a situation my sister is currently facing with FUTA (Federal University of Technology, Akure). She was granted admission into the university, and naturally, as any excited prospective student would, she began fulfilling all the requirements: paying the acceptance fee, tuition fees, and even securing accommodation. All seemed to be going well—until the institution suddenly declared her ineligible to register because she wasn’t 16 years old at the time of admission. Now, I understand that there are guidelines and age requirements, but here’s where her case becomes unique: she turned 16 on the 12th of January, even before the scheduled matriculation ceremony. So technically, by the time her journey as a university student would officially begin, she already met the age criterion. Despite this, FUTA has refused to allow her to register. It’s heartbreaking and frustrating. How can an institution accept payments for multiple fees, knowing full well her age at the time of admission, and then later use it as a barrier against her? This speaks to a larger issue I’ve observed with Nigerian institutions—a lack of consistency, proper guidelines, and clear communication. Students and their families pour their resources and hopes into this process, only to be met with unnecessary roadblocks that could have been avoided with a little competence and foresight. My sister’s dream of furthering her education is now hanging in the balance, not because of any fault of her own but because of a rigid and unfair system. I’m reaching out to this forum to share her story and ask: Has anyone experienced or heard of a similar situation? What can we do to challenge this decision and ensure she gets the opportunity she deserves? Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any advice, insight, or even words of encouragement would mean the world to us right now.

Find another school. Never make mistake of seeking admission without meeting all criteria. It's waste of time and money. You were made to learn the hardway cos Nigeria is having excess student seeking admission with limited availabile space. That's why many students apply for JAMB, buy admission form of tertiary institutions but few are chosen. The explanation long. It's an endemic problem of a failed society like Nigeria that's having swollen population with little resources. Tertiary school slots are few so people scramble for the little available. Admission committees use any opportunity to reduce applicants to their desired numbers. |

Good. Law is law We must not copy everything they do abroad. WHY YOUR SISTER APPLY IN THE FIRST PLACE WHEN SHE'S NOT QUALIFIED BY AGE? |

She should sue for a refund and stop disturbing the peace. That said, a 16yr old doesn't belong in a University, whether private or public. |

Laws are laws That being said.....! Matriculation date dosen't mean anything when it comes to admission criteria. But the bigger question is...how did she beat the system . ordinarily, she's not supposed to have gained admission.. going by the guidelines |

They shouldn't have admitted her in the first place of they felt she's underage. |

Most Nigerians are fraudulent in nature. FUTA should refund her money fast! |

Most of the schools give age criterion and cut off to the student's birthday. UTME is strictly for 16+. You guys overlook all these and want to claim victim? I wish you don't get a refund. This is how we all turned Nigeria upside-down. |

Law is law, futa can't break the law for your sister. But the school should also refund her money or defer her admission if that option is possible. And now, I guess deferment is not possible |

GboyegaD:Why was money collected? Aren't they expected to check eligibility of applying students before accepting payments? So, the schools acceptance payments first and ask questions later?😁 |

| Re: FUTA Denied His Sister Admission After Paying Fees For Being Less Than 16 Years by maasoap(m): 8:42pm On Jan 20, 2025 |
Makamatic:There is excess of students seeking admission despite the hard economy and the fact that most schools fees is now in the region of 500k and above. And despite the fact that many old intake/students are finding it difficult to continue paying the fees |

RoadMozart:Beware of those offering to help you to circumvent the law, the conversation would eventually boils down to you parting with some money to 'make it happen' and I am 100% certain that your money will enter voicemail. Your best bet is to ask your sister to defer the admission! Remember that if you bent the rules now and get in, her admission can be invalidated down the run after she may have wasted some years and money chasing after her dream and career, because she was not eligible to be admitted in the first place. |

What money cannot do on earth does not exist. Find and talk to the HOD of the department with a brown envelope. That's all my man. |

If they bend the rules for your sister it means they will also have to bend it for others and eventually there will be no rules. By the way an underage girl has no business being in the university because she will likely by misled by more mature students! |

Khayfacor:She should go private, one of my niece applied to Unikag and pass but wasn't admitted cos she is still 14yrs. But McPherson gave her admission. They are just 3 in her department, she cry to her parent almost everyday that school is stressful n how she is struggling( almost all the student in her faculty are mostly under 15/16. I don't see any gains in sending kids to uni at those tender age |
