She should sue for a refund and stop disturbing the peace.

That said, a 16yr old doesn't belong in a University, whether private or public.
Not entitled to a refund. They have freely donated to the school. If anything, they should be prosecuted.

Beware of those offering to help you to circumvent the law, the conversation would eventually boils down to you parting with some money to 'make it happen' and I am 100% certain that your money will enter voicemail.

Your best bet is to ask your sister to defer the admission!

Remember that if you bent the rules now and get in, her admission can be invalidated down the run after she may have wasted some years and money chasing after her dream and career, because she was not eligible to be admitted in the first place.
Deferring can't work in this case. She's now 16 years old, they still denied her already. Why would they admit her next year with this year utme if they denied her this year that she's already 16? Na to claim the money back

She should go private, one of my niece applied to Unikag and pass but wasn't admitted cos she is still 14yrs. But McPherson gave her admission. They are just 3 in her department, she cry to her parent almost everyday that school is stressful n how she is struggling( almost all the student in her faculty are mostly under 15/16. I don't see any gains in sending kids to uni at those tender age
Damn this is crazy

A country with consistent national strike in educational sector shouldn’t set a boundary /limit to admission knowing fully well that kid will not graduate until 23 years old.

Normally that kid should graduate at age 21 at most if he is admitted

Law is law my dear.

JAMB said, if you are not up to 16 years of age or will not turn 16 by 31st of August of the said year, DO NOT register for JAMB. They are very strict about that

A Cry For Justice: My Sister’s Peculiar Case At FUTA

Hello everyone,
I’m writing this with a heavy heart, hoping to get some advice or raise awareness about a situation my sister is currently facing with FUTA (Federal University of Technology, Akure).

She was granted admission into the university, and naturally, as any excited prospective student would, she began fulfilling all the requirements: paying the acceptance fee, tuition fees, and even securing accommodation. All seemed to be going well—until the institution suddenly declared her ineligible to register because she wasn’t 16 years old at the time of admission.

Now, I understand that there are guidelines and age requirements, but here’s where her case becomes unique: she turned 16 on the 12th of January, even before the scheduled matriculation ceremony. So technically, by the time her journey as a university student would officially begin, she already met the age criterion.

Despite this, FUTA has refused to allow her to register. It’s heartbreaking and frustrating. How can an institution accept payments for multiple fees, knowing full well her age at the time of admission, and then later use it as a barrier against her?

This speaks to a larger issue I’ve observed with Nigerian institutions—a lack of consistency, proper guidelines, and clear communication. Students and their families pour their resources and hopes into this process, only to be met with unnecessary roadblocks that could have been avoided with a little competence and foresight.

My sister’s dream of furthering her education is now hanging in the balance, not because of any fault of her own but because of a rigid and unfair system. I’m reaching out to this forum to share her story and ask:

Has anyone experienced or heard of a similar situation?

What can we do to challenge this decision and ensure she gets the opportunity she deserves?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Any advice, insight, or even words of encouragement would mean the world to us right now.
Request for a refund wink

The cut off date for 16 year olds is October of that year for UNILAG. Age limit has always been part of university requirements. I don't see it as injustice because an applicant should have done the due diligence before choosing that university.

I experienced something similar in a different university many long years ago. I lost that admission. In your case, write to the school requesting a refund of your fees. They will refund you. But someone may need to go down to the school, or you contact a student you know there, to help you confirm the modalities on going about it.

She may consider IJMB too. She will get directly into 200 level if she passes. She can also write JAMB so she has both JAMB and IJMB. As for the cutoff date, most schools use Independence Day (October 1) when determining the age.

But you are right about that communication ish. It is more of a "I don't care" attitude. Most universities look down on their students and stress the hell out of them. That's why many almost never associate with their univeristies once they leave. Most Nigerians even rate and return to their secondary schools years after leaving. They will do stuff for their secondary schools, but almost no one considers their university.

What useless advice are you giving? Are you in the school system to give such bogus advice?

Don't discourage the kid. In some African countries,14yrs are eligible for university admission. So, Why trying to discourage her?

You could do better than this!
Re: FUTA Denied His Sister Admission After Paying Fees For Being Less Than 16 Years by nuelson2016(m): 10:19pm On Jan 20, 2025
@OP, your best bet at this point it to reach out to the VeryDarkMan, provide him with all payment receipts and express yourself in all honesty.

He will take it up from there, once he set his ringlight & call the institution out - things will align (most likely a refund).

Ps: chat him on Ig or FB!

All the best!

The institution is wrong. The current Minister of health has announced that the +18 criteria is no more.

Take it up with the Ministry of education.

All these arrogance and pompousness from our universities shows an underlying problem. Over population and possibly irrelevance of the degree! Sometimes I just wonder why a black man will refuse to think for once. All these rush for a mere paper is the height of all frauds. Training people for unavailable jobs without them challenging it in anyway shows you the power of mass delusion.

My son has a rather similar but straight forward experience, he was offered admission, paid acceptance but he was not 16 years old as at time of matriculation, the school offered us to defer his admission till this academic session 2024/2025, we did not go forward other than the acceptance fees payment, we are trying now to activate the admission since the school in question will not resume until around March ending or early April, date of matriculation should be the date he or she is officially admitted, that's the experience, FUTA should give her opportunity to defer her admission if truly it's because of age, though, school policy differs!

From my personal experience in Futo.. I think the options are as follows: Differ the admission, apply for refund of school fees and acceptance since they don’t want to accept her or write a letter to the vc through the faculty Hod on compassionate ground to accept the girl. But trust me differ if them no gree.

FUTA is going by her age as at when she wrote the UTME and post-UTME exams. She was definitely not 16 then.
Let her find something productive to do for one year then reapply.

You will break the law without following instructions and be disturbing Nigerians with your cry when it boomerangs. Schools rarely accept under 16 years but you people must always cut corners. You are not even supposed to attempt the admission except it is clearly stated by the school. Goats!

Shame on you!
