It was 4:21pm 20th of January 2025, i am sitting down on the grass in a field close to the Accident and Emergency area of the University of portharcourt teaching hospital (UPTH). Thinking about how the year 2024 was for me..still no major breakthrough but i was still glad to feel the evening breeze..hear the birds chirp and see with my eyes the trees around blossoming with flowers.

While trekking to a place i initially hoped to get aid i stumbled upon a new laboratory opened just adjacent to the flyover in Rumueprikom portharcourt, there was a sign 'BLOOD DONORS NEEDED' immediately the thought hit me. What if these guys pay for this donation, i shrugged probably its voluntary, well no harm in making enquries i concluded.

knock knock hello afternoon, "yes please come in" oh gooday ma i said im michael by name so the sign outside blood donors, 'yeaah so have you donated before? Mr michael' no this would be my first time, you guys pay for the donation. "yes we do its 6k per pint"

in my head i was like whaat? 6k? just for my blood i had not eaten properly for days i was dead broke nothing. i figured if the lab was charging 6k then other bigger labs or hospitals bigger in ph here would pay more.

i then got to a place around the area i could use a free system to access the internet dig a little digging and found out that blood donation was a thing even in nigeria here.

Boy i was glad smiling already thinking how my diet will improve in quality cus ill try to eat well now i can be earning weekly, i had all these positive thoughts.

i immediately decided to go to a big hospital in AIRFORCE area of portharcourt. Save A life Hospital, with no penny on me i didnt hesitate to trek the 3 hour journey to my destination, Afterall even if i had no cash i had what could always give me cash MY BlOOD.

ladies and gentlemen i got there..boy the place was big and really beatiful, ofcourse malnorishment will make you look weird and skinny. it took a lot of explaining to convince the security guys that i am indeed mentally stable and i just want to make enquiries.

After some minutes of talking i gained access, went in and walked straight to what looked liked the reception.
"Gooday ma please can i get directions to the lab"? OK what do you want to do? One of the lady asked, staring at me like a was about to rob her or i was a danger like i scaled the fence and the security didnt see me coming in LOL. Sorry i shouldnt be laughing but the thing is that look was familiar i get it alot when i want to enter an eatery to ask for assistance, or gain access to a wedding reception i know nobody from adam with hopes of getting something to eat.

Well i replied calmly "i would love to make enquiries concening blood donations"
Alright she said, take the stairs 3rd door second floor thats the lab. Mehn i thanked her and bolted hoping they dont change their minds and tell me they've closed just so i dont go in.

knock knock Gooday, "open, welcome mr" Mr michael sir, please i wont take your time i just wanted to know if you guys accept blood donors and yes commercial donors i said.

As i walked down the stairs into the reception area and out past the security guys, i didnt even look to wave or say goodbye to any of them. i couldnt believe my ears 8 thousand naira for my blood. Only one question lingered in my mind what if this amount can go higher? Well only one way to find out

Military Hospital along aba express way portharcourt was our next stop. The sun was hot i was exhasted nothing liquid or solid had entered my mouth all day..though i had hope. I had blood that was all i needed. That was all i would ever need i thought.

This was a different hospital, i noticed majority of the staffs wore camouflage, they greeted each other with Morning sir despite that it was evening, regardless of the gender all i heard was morning sir. That was weird but i had to walk upright it was as though i was in a barrack every where i looked serious looking force men. i wasnt used to this..lemme make me enquiry and bolt out.

The place was complex, i asked a man for directions, trust me i made sure he was not on uniform, with the hunger getting worse i could hear my voice gradually sounding like i inhaled large amount of Nitrogen. Incase you have no idea what it sounds like..exactly like the chipmunks in Alvin and the chipmunks

The man i asked for direction took me to an office where i saw another man on uniform, this was the Lab attendant. i told him i was a commercial donor and i wanted to know the amount they offer for a pint. Sadly i was told same 8k as in the previous place.

At that point i started considering it..ive trekked all day lemme just give them the blood..buy rice and moi moi and coke and eat.But i said nah i'll make one last enquiry and that would be at the University of portharcourt teaching hospital (UPTH) who knows this might be a bigger offer i concluded.

Trust me - I donated a pint (for an uncle free) some years ago, and immediately had to drink malt to replenish the blood removed as I started feeling light headed.

Why not take the 8k, and do the needful before you go kpai for nothing.

lastly make sure you aren't hiv posiitve as that would be checked.

There was a problem, this hospital is located in choba around 3 and a half hours on foot from where im at. An aboki selling watches and wristbands was passing, i psssst at him negotiated and sold my only watch for 900naira. This can take me to my destination but thats sufficient for just going alone.

Choba-choba-choba the motor loaders at Rumuola juction chanted, choba how much i asked whilst entering silmutaneously. Choba hold your 1k the driver responded..i get 900 i begged, i have an emergecy and its the hospital i'm going to.

Got no reply that was a yes for me, paid and we moved vehicle got filled in no time i was impressed, felt dizzy fell asleep and woke up to the vehicle reaching upth juction, came down weak and realized i still had to enter a mini UNIPORT shuttle to enter inside, well i had no shishi i opted to trekking.

Less than 10mins i arrive. i asked around and got directed to the lab. A very bold notice on the wall saying THE blah blah OF UPTH NEITHER SELLS NOR BUY BLOOD.

Well i'm from Najia and i am very well aware that the notice is enough proof that i'm in the right place. Well the infastructure of the hospital is you know..uhmm okay. Considering the fact it was built sometime back in the days.

While trying to knock the door was widely opened, i could see the lab attendants and i was trying to say ma im here to donate blood, but its like she was pushing me to another room to complete the statement there.

Ladies and gentlemen we entered the room loh and behold, 6 other guys like me mid 20s i guess all discussing laughing while been hooked with blooding entering their blood bags.

It was my first time seeing this in real life..the amount of blood seemed alot to be called a pint. it could've been called something else the word pint sounded like few drops to me. I am seeing the size of one full sachet water pack filled with blood.

Instantly i started having mixed feelings i told myself see michael you either give them this blood or else you will just die here, you have nobody. Already your body has reached it limit, for real i could feel it mehn..i had to eat sooner or later.

With the little energy in me I Summoned courage ..Ma? i called out im ready.
okay write your name and we'll check your blood type. after taking a little drop dey put it in a little case like transparent marker cover..and told me she'll be back.

While waiting for the result another lady came in with a list called a name the guy beside me answered and he was given cash immediately. i used my eye to count it, bro it was 6k..i asked him if they'll owe him and he said no its 6k they do pay.

Damn! Na wa for me i thought, well too late for regrets now. Give them rush out buy food eat, survive thats the plan. Few mins later the same lady entered "MICHAEL NWABRIJE" thats me i answered with a faint voice.

Perhaps they wanna pay me first? Not bad atleatst make the money dey my hand as dey bleed me i thought.

"Mr Michael your blood type is AB+ we dont need it. People with your blood type are extremly rare, other blood types cannot recieve your blood. Only your blood type. So sorry about that"

i rephrased the statement in my head and this is what i understood. your blood type is useless and has no value so do you kindly get out.
