https://unilag.edu.ng/?p=46321 Before the establishment of numbers of private universities in Nigeria, government universities persistently destroyed brilliant academic performance of Nigerian students. Lecturers deliberately fail students and boast in class and that 'in this department no student will get first class' as if was an abomination. PhD and masters students assists lecturers with house chores to get timely approval of their projects. Getting first class was very difficult and so rear before now. But this time that private universities ranked above government universities especially federal universities, things have changed positively. Seeing covenant University above University of Ibadan, University of lagos, University of Ife send seriousness and spirit of fairness in heart of Government universities and their lecturers. I'm sure number of first class graduates is one of the criterias for ranking universities which is very good. This is the best time to enrol in government universities in Nigeria because you now get value for your academic struggles. Truly, monopoly is bad. Those who brought the idea of private universities in Nigeria deserves accolade

First class wasn't rampant in my days. But with young lecturers and profs coming on board..things changed. |

Just 3%. Meanwhile in uk its 30%. They are still deliberately failing people . Some claim too much first class devalues tertiary education. Meanwhile almost all the innovations in recent times come from UK, USA, Europe and Asia

ednut1:It's mostly Africans and other foreigners that account for that high number of first class degrees in UK universities. Let them filter out the actual percentage of British students who bag first class, one might be shocked it's not even up to 10%. |

thesicilian:Jesus! That is not entirely true! The majority of undergraduates across British universities are British citizens, and yes, white people. Because I am sure you will say na Indians and Nigerians descendants in the UK. The UK is 80%+ white. So how can Blacks (3.7%) or say Indians (3.1%) populate the top-tier academic ranks in British universities? You are mistaking postgraduate students for undergraduates. There is just no way foreigners will populate the undergraduate student population in any country. Where would the natives now study? Since that is the case, how can the same foreigners make the majority of top performers at the undergraduate level? Haba! Let's fear God when we write on Obasanjo's Internet. |

Kudos to UNILAG and its management! No university in the East (south south and south east) has convoked a 5.0 CGPA graduate. Are the universities' academic and administrative staff in the East saying that they don't get the best and brightest students? Abi our people no sabi book? UI also does well, but old posts (pre-corona) on Nairaland say that the Biochemistry and Geology departments are OAU are demonic in restricting academic performers compared to their counterparts in engineering and accounting. |

thesicilian:you just want to make yourself feel good. However official statistics exist . White males get first class more than the other races https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/education-skills-and-training/higher-education/undergraduate-degree-results/latest/ Cc Gerrard59

ednut1:It's obvious you didn't get anywhere near a first class because even the statistics you posted supports my assumption. I specified in my write up "Africans and other foreigners," as against the British themselves. That means I lumped the Africans, Asians, Mexicans etc and other immigrants in one group, versus the British in another group. From the 1st pic you shared the Asians and Blacks alone were over 44% already, not even considering other ethnic groups yet. And don't forget that the "whites" are not just British alone, there are still other foreigners among them. |

thesicilian:the real olodo here is you. You can’t interpret simple statistics. You are adding percentages that have different base/ totals. Smh. Black and asian combined is 24%

Similar thing with WAEC, before NECO was introduced. You'll be hearing two students passing maths and English in a whole Local government, it all changes when NECO started. |

ednut1:The figures are good. Numbers don't lie. Where I got to know without seeing a number is simple: The UK is a white-dominated country, so the natives aka white people predominate the undergraduate students population and should populate the top performers. There is nowhere in the world where non-natives out-number the natives in primary, secondary or university education (undergraduate). It just does not make sense. Our people like making unfounded claims like one Olusola who stated that if we leave the British medical system, it would collapse whereas we don't make up to 15% of Filipinos in the same system. |
