shortgun:
He's right, in the UK, you can become a medical doctor through apprenticeship without studying medicine in any University.
Embrace the change the world brings.
Don't mislead people. In the UK medical apprenticeship scheme, students are attached to a trust, usually a NHS trust as apprentice in a hospital while they also study in a university. The advantage of this is that the burden of school fees payment is removed as the trust Zpays the fees and the student works as apprentice.
Re: NUC Upgrades Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Optometry Degrees To Doctor Status by Dancebreaker:
Very bad idea. If anything, a poor country (yes, poor in every developmental index) should be reducing duration of clinical courses.

Cuba has managed to do it fantastically despite US sanctions since 1959.

We need to produce highly qualified professionals as fast as possible. UK produces physios, OTs, nurses, radiographers and others in 3 years.
Pharmacists in 4 years.

We need these professionals more quickly than UK. You take at least 6 years to train optometrists and then loose half of them soon after to Japa?

At a time we have financial issues as a country and need care professionals urgently, why upgrade now and spend more money?

We should be making the training programs more effective.

Dont say what you don't know. There is no where in the world you study medicine by apprenticeship.

What they do in uk Is ACP. Allied or advanced clinical practitioners. . Even at this their job is restricted. They can't prescribe and even order some investigations.

It means nothing. UK has started teaching Medicine through apprenticeship. You don't need go to University to be a Doctor. Now na handwork just like mechanics and hair dressering salon.
Medicine Apprenticeship program has been paused in the UK. Concerns about quality.

Na by force for NUC to extend training to 6 years because you wan give them doctor. Stick it to 5 years to make it even. Those who had graduated earlier before the change trained for 5 years and will not feel discriminated

Ask the pharmacists in the teaching hospitals and your conclusions would be different.

I won't speak for every doc but I don't look down on others. I had pharmacist and nurses friends when I did my housejob in upth. I knew many other docs like that too. There may be arrogant docs but its a personal issue. There's other arrogant folks like nurses, engineers, lawyers etc. U don't needing to generalize it.

UNIBEN has been doing Doctor of Pharmacy for quite some time now. Good that other universities are now upgrading.

Government should also ensure to employ those who already have Pharm.D, DPT and DOPT into the teaching hospitals and schools of Pharmacy to act as preceptors to students on clinical rotations and as lecturers in clinical pharmacy. It is an anomaly for BPharm holders to be the ones mentoring Pharm.D students in our teaching hospitals!

Government should also give some kind advantage in terms of remuneration to the Pharm.D holders to serve as incentives for others to upgrade.

UNIBEN Pharmacy graduates have remained the best in practice in the country all thanks to the extra work they do in the Pharm.D program. The difference is always clear when you try to compare UNIBEN pharmD holders with BPharm holders.

It happens in ALL institutions.

Even among the Medical Doctors, the Consultants see themselves above the other doctors.

The Pharmacists just did everything smartly to close the gap between themselves and the Medical doctors. They did not just start now. There was a time they also go ON_CALL like the doctors.

They've been working on this for more than 15-20 years now. it started with the notion that a Pharmacist cannot become minister of Health or Head a Teaching Hospital!
Re: NUC Upgrades Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Optometry Degrees To Doctor Status by Jman06(m): 11:50am On Jan 23, 2025
Government should take it further by ensuring the practice of PHARMACEUTICAL CARE in our hospitals by the Pharm.D holders. A conducive environment should be provided for this. Pharmaceutical care ensures that patients get the best outcomes from their drug treatment. It does not interfere with the duties of medical doctors like some poorly informed med doctors think.

Doing the above would be of great benefits to our healthcare system and life expectancy generally.

It is good that you are an exception to this margination of others and I believe that many medical Doctors are like you.

Even within the Pharmacists, they have their own level of margination and superiority complex they exhibit. Thus the indictment is NOT on the medical doctors.

I think this is a challenge to the Medical doctors in Nigerian to focus less on immediate financial renumeration but aim at establishing policies through the government that will take care of both the hospitals and the medical doctors.

For instance,
1. There should be a policy on getting equipment manufacturers to set up service stations for medical equipments in Nigeria.
2. There should be policies on getting a fixed minimum percentage of the national budget for our Hospitals
3. there should be a policy on giving extra pays for specializations on specific medical procedures and modern madical equipment
4. There should be policies on accreditations of Hospital that enforces standards across board.

Rather than always engaging the government only with respect to Allowances and other remunerations.

etc You should know better than me about the need of the medical profession in Nigeria.

The truth it that till today, Pharmacists cannot head any government hospitals and they cannot be ministers of Health without lots of grumblings

I understand why we docs insist on being minister of health. Docs have a more rounder knowledge of healthcare due to longer training but in my opinion, any health care personnel can be minister AS LONG AS THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING

You obviously haven't been following the trend of NARD(National Association of Resident Doctors) for years. They have actively been insisting on better equipment for hospitals amongst other demands. Government mostly ignore or pay lip service to those demands

Now, a Pharmacist can be an MD of a Hospital and ultimately become Minister of Health in Nigeria.

Kudos.

BUT
Seeing to reaching people of influence in Government who can push your agendas quietly or even planting your people into Government with the purpose of actualising the desire of the organisation.

I agree with you that a Medical doctor will actually be better because they have a more rounder knowledge of healthcare by experience
BUT this is not my issue or problem.

I was just looking at the pharmacists who feel sidelined whenever it came to leadership of medical facilities and they seem to know what the arguments of the Medical doctors would be and they are preparing answers even before you get to the point of conflic.

This wass why I said: Pharmacists are closing up the GAP between themselves and you Medical doctors.
