Military installations in Nigeria are named after individuals, locations of famous battles and in some cases, locations of the barracks. (There is another category that I will tell you about when it's time for me to rant).

However, somehing happened in the early 1990s and early 2000s.

1990s

President Ibrahim Babangida built army barracks in Abuja as the Federal Government was moving from Lagos to Abuja and he gave those barracks some interesting names.

If I remember correctly, there were Fort Obasanjo, Fort IBB, Fort Abacha and Gado Nasko Barracks.

In 1995, after General Olusegun Obasanjo was arrested and accused of plotting a coup, General Sani Abacha renamed Fort Obasanjo (I think it became Yakubu Gowon Barracks, but I can't remember for sure).

2000s

I believe that these names (from the 1990s) are responsible for what General Danjuma did.

Lieutenant General Theophilus Danjuma was the minister of defence in the Obasanjo Administration (1999-2003) and he set up a committee to rename the barracks. He complained that barracks were not named after individuals (living or dead) during the colonial era and that the first time that a barracks was named after an individual was when the barracks in Kaduna was named after Muhammadu Ribadu (who died when he was minister of defence during the First Republic). He said that, during the Colonial Era, barracks were usually named after locations of famous battles.

The committee came up with a new naming system and the names of many barracks (especially those that were named in the 1990s) were changed.

Spirits

Much to my annoyance, the names of many spirit barracks were also changed. That's the last class that I haven't mentioned, many military formations were named after spirits and I LOVED those names, but the names were changed in the 2000s. So, NNS Olokun became NNS Beecroft and NNS Umalokun became NNS Delta.

However, things kind of returned to normal after the Obasanjo Administration left office. No, the names of the barracks were not changed back, but new barracks were named after living people.

A barracks was named after Goodluck Jonathan when he was president and a barracks was named after Muhammadu Buhari when he was president.
