The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has filed a defamation suit at the Enugu High Court against the former Special Assistant on Digital Communication to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad.

The suit centred on alleged statements made by Ahmad via his X account (formerly Twitter) on January 19, 2025, labelling Kanu a terrorist and accusing his supporters of being enemies of the country.
Kanu, through his lead team of lawyers, Aloy Ejimakor, is seeking a declaration that Ahmed’s statements, which were also republished on platforms such as Talkofnaija.com and Phoenix-Browser.com are defamatory.

He argued that the statements portray him as a convicted terrorist and have caused significant harm to his reputation, integrity, and standing in the community.

The plaintiff, among other things, is seeking an order directing Ahmad to retract the defamatory publication across all platforms, including his X handle and the websites where the statement was republished.

He also demands an unreserved apology published prominently in The Guardian, The Sun, and Daily Trust newspapers.

He is also seeking a claim for ₦100 billion in general and exemplary damages for the harm caused and a perpetual injunction restraining Ahmad from making further defamatory statements against Kanu.

ALSO, Ahmad has criticised the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, for not addressing and condemning the killing of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operative, Halisu Sahabi, during a raid in Awka, Anambra State capital.

In a post on his verified X account yesterday, Ahmad said that he expected Obi to extend his condolences to the EFCC and Sahabi’s family.

According to him, Obi, in whose state the incident occurred, should have strongly condemned the killing of the anti-graft operative.

Ahmad wrote: “I expected Peter Obi to surprise us by extending his condolences to the EFCC and the family of Aminu Sahabi, who was brutally murdered, while carrying out his official duties, by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu.

Is this a joke?. Why can't you sue FG that proscribed you a terrorist and gazetted it. The court will eventually slam the 100billion on Kanu for frivolities. He even took it to Enugu, thinking he is wise.

Not sure how this would work, but I long to see someone being sued for defamation actually pay the money demanded.

Suing for defamation was a thing in 2024. Not sure any ever went through, or maybe it did and I missed it.

Plus, we don't see any public apologies from those being sued and we don't hear what became of the case.

It often dies a natural death—I guess.

If those who aren't in government net don't succeed with their defamation cases, what chance has someone who is a government prisoner?

Nigeria will get to that place someday when defamation cases are a thing. We just aren't there yet.

Secondly, is his lawyer that looks like a man they plucked from a beer parlour not aware that both the federal govt and the SE governors have declared IPOB a terrorist organization and therefore any member talk less the leader is indeed a terrorist in the eyes of the law?

As highlighted by a poster above, IPOB has been gazetted a proscribed terrorist organization. You will think a lawyer understands the implication of an official gazette.

If I were Kanu, I will find another lawyer. You would fail a 1st year law student for not understanding that if the government has gazetted an organization a terrorist organization and you are a member then as a member of said organization, legally you are a terrorist. There is no defamation if the government has officially gazetted you a terrorist, where did he learn his law?

Long overdue...the guy is just looking for attention to see if Tpain government will have mercy upon his hungry looking stomach and give him appointment....kanu should have ignored the werey like Peter obi did....EFCC agent acted like a criminal and unfortunately got killed...going to someone house in the dead of night with gun and not wearing no uniform for identification is completely wrong....

1. IPOB was labelled a terrorist organisation but Kanu is a personal legal entity that have not be labelled a terrorist by any means.
2. The case of proscription of IPOB is a matter in court, not subject to anybody taking it upon himself to declare publicly until the court gives final ruling.
The reasons above made it hard for Nigeria to officially request Kanu's extradition from any country, they have to cut corners.

If Nigeria is working well, Bashir Ahmad should eat some free beans in prison as a deterrent.
