January 15, 1966 - Arthur Unegbe Killed For Not Handing Over Keys To The Armoury by OkCornel(op):
Did you know Arthur Unegbe, a patriotic Igbo officer was killed by the coupists for not handing over the keys to the armoury in a supposed “Igbo” coup?

Did you also know we have conspiracy theorists running amok on this platform claiming Ironsi was part of the coup plotters despite warning the top politicians of an impending coup on January 12?

Who heeded to his warnings?
Who didn’t?

Well…the politicians were warned but did nothing despite seeing governments toppled in the DRC, Togo, Central African Republic and Dahomey before January 1966!

January 15, 1966 would not have happened if security intelligence report was acted on!

Don’t let history revisionists distort the narrative.

They turned a blind eye to Ironsi’s coup warning on January 12. The coupists struck on January 15.

Now let’s play this scenario.

If the intelligence agency issues a warning of a coup and no precaution is taken by those in power. Who is really culpable here?

Mutiny is treasonable, no arguments about that.

But failure to act on intelligence report? Damnable.

You don't need to worry about all this. These Nigerians only remember that coup is bad with January 15 1966 coup because Igbos were involved

All 7 other coups that happened later in Nigeria are are never remembered because they were done by Northerners

Northerners who carried out far more bloody coups such as, Murtala Mohammed, were put on the national currency

Muhammadu Buhari who overthrew the democratically elected government of Shagari, was elected President twice

Obasanjo who siezed power after putting down the Dimka coup, was elected President

Babangida who did his own coup is GCFR

So forget about it, Nigeria only remembers that coup is bad, only on January 15th. All other coups and their participants are celebrated

At no time did Ironsi inform the PM of a coup.

It was the Nigerian Police Espionage Branch (E-Branch) that had been investigating and conducting Inteligence reports on an impending coup days before Jan 15.

The Sarduna had even reported suspicious late night troop movements led by Nzeagwu to the Police around his residence in Kaduna. The Police followed up on the report and interrogated Nzeagwu who said he was conducting a "training excercise".

Even when Ejoor narrowly escaped being murdered that eventful night by Ifeanjuna at the Ikoyi Hotel room suite that Ifeanjuna booked him into, and rushed to call Ironsi in his switched hotel room that there might be a coup going on after Ifeanjuna could not locate him in the room, Ironsi did not appear shocked to hear of a coup ongoing but more shocked to hear Ejoor's voice.

The coup was an ethnic agenda to cleanse both the political and military architecture and for that it succeeded.

It was Ironsi, Orizu and Zik who could not manage their new found powers and had rushed their centrist ethnic agenda .

Are you aware that Decree 34 was signed secretly on Jan 16 but only announced a few months later?

That decree had all the hallmarks of Azikiwe and his Marxist ambitions.

Stop this lie.

It was the Police E-Branch that had information on an impending coup and had alerted the PM on it.

Even the Sarduna knew about an impending coup days before it occured owing to Nzeagwu conducting troop movements in the dead of the night around the Sarduna's residence.the Sarduna had lodged an official compliant to the police and the same police had carried out a thorough investigation and even interrogated Nzeagwu on the reason for moving his troops in the dead of the night around the Sarduna's residence. Nzeagwu will lie that he was conducting military drills and excercise but the police didn't buy it and they duly sent a security report to the PM .

Stop lying and twisting facts.

1. Who was in charge of the military armoury?
2. How and why did Arthur Unegbe die?
3. Who informed Tafawa Balewa of an impending coup?

Answer these questions let’s see who’s lying.

Did the Sarduna not report to the police of suspicious troop movements around his residence in the dead of the night ?

The Police E-Branch was so good at sniffing out coups that after the General's coup that ousted Shagari , the new military leadership had to unbundle the E-Branch.

The E-Branch investigative report was what got Awo jailed for treason. The E branch even notified Gowon and later Murtala of a coup.

Even after being watered down by the military leadership of Buhari and IBB, the same E-Branch had notified IBB of the Okah coup after locating a warehouse in Ikorodu with a cache of military grade weapons.

The police and not Ironsi informed the PM.

I thank God that Maj. General Ejoor granted an exclusive interview with one of the leading national dailies a few years before his death.

Ejoor remains the only one who has spoken extensively about the events of Jan 15 and how it led to the civil war.

Note that Ejoor was penciled down to be eliminated that night in his ikoyi hotel room which ifeanjuna had personally booked him and other officers including Lt Pam.

Ejoor escaped death by the whiskers after requesting a room change over a noisy air-conditioning unit.

At the dead of the night Ifeanjuna stormed the hotel and with his men opened fire on the assigned room Ejoor was supposed to be in.

Ejoor was awakened by the barrage of machine gun shots and after listening from his new room found out this was a military operation and from there placed a call to Ironsi to inform him that something was amiss.

You can search the interview here using NL search button.

Ejoor will then later return to his command post in Enugu and when his fellow Ibo officers saw him , they thought he was a ghost because they expected him to have been killed. Ejoor quickly mobilised all the officers and men under his command to address them. The officers under Ejoor were all ibos but the majority of the men were northerners. Fearing that Ejoor will reveal more to the northern troops , the conspiracy took another twist with the involvement of the regional police head who summoned Ejoor to a meeting. Ejoor sensing danger skipped town and went back to Lagos to meet Ironsi. When Ejoor was summoned to Ironsi's office, he was greeted by a loaded gun pointed at him by Ironsi from behind his desk.

As per the counter-coup, the remaining junior officers' of northern background had come to see the coup as a purge of their senior officers from the military and removal of other ethnic leaders. They had concluded that sooner or later the purge will extend to them and so hence why they struck back and HARD.

The Sarduna had whiff of it from observing unusual troop movements and had reported the matter to the police long before your Ironsi ever made such security report.

What action did Ironsi as Head of the military do to fish out the coup plotters ? Or did he expect the PM to do his job for him?

The PM should have given orders to restructure the military formation/architecture around the country.

Didn’t you see how Cameroon and Rwanda responded to coup rumours last year? Jeez!

You think the head of military will take such decisions on a whim without authorisation from the head of state?!

What did Ironsi do as the CDS to fish out the coupists from his rank and file ?

Were the troops under the PM or Ironsi?

The PM had no direct control of the military like the current civilian executive President..

So what was Ironsi job as head of the army ? Was he so clueless that after discovering a coup plot did nothing to stop it?

No true revolution can ever take place in Nigeria without being distorted into a tribal narrative. The #EndSARS protests in Lagos serve as a glaring example. Initiated and amplified on social media by celebrities and influencers, and championed by the younger generation, the movement was nearly twisted into a claim that Igbos were plotting to burn down Lagos and the Southwest.

What was promoted by Lagos artist and celebrities like Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, and Falz almost became an igbo thing

Please read the screenshot I’ve pasted here earlier.

Ironsi didn’t know the details of those involved in the coup plot at the time of giving the warning.

The E-Branch would have shared such Inteligence to Ironsi as well so that's why you should not credit Ironsi for informing the PM.

Both the PM and Ironsi plus the IG of Police knew there was a coup plot brewing based on the Inteligence report carried out by the E-Branch.

Stop crediting Ironsi for anything.

If at all, Ironsi refusal to reign in his officers and fish out the coupists exposes his connivance in the plot.

The PM does not have such powers. The PM can only do such with Parliament's approval.

Can a British PM declare war or order troop depolyments without both Houses of Parliament approval and that of the Sovereign head of England's final nod?

The Prime minister did not have CnC in his designation like an executive President.

So neither Azikiwe (President) or Tafawa Balewa (Prime Minister) could control/direct the military…yet the prime minister was more powerful than the president (a figure head). Interesting.

Remind me why the Prime Minister was way more powerful than the President in the First Republic.
