based on what was said "they lost their tools", 787 uses a glass cockpit.

You dont turn back because of turbulence, except there is a medical emergency or your plane is damaged.....turbulence is normaland it doesnt last, you fly through turbulence or you fly around it. It is either malfunctioning flight sensors and/or loss of flight controls. again based on the comment "we lost our tools" it suggest they lost flight controls (hence the turbulence like conditions) and it later came back (which is why they were able to return to Lagos) suggesting failure of the electronic flight control system somewhere. it is a fly by wire airplane with no manual controls though it is supposed to have redundancy.

Furthermore, to the best of my knowledge, though possible, turbulence is not common on that flight route as you can see below, they only got as a far as Ivory coast.
You are concluding on the reason for the diversion based on what a passenger said. A passenger who doesn't even seem to understand the technical workings of an airplane. If they lost control of critical systems, then would be bleeped. If they however got lucky, they wouldn't used the closest airport which was in Ghana and not drag out their luck my returning to Lagos.

Yesterday evening by 5pm I was at murtala Muhammed airport, Lagos. My sister was travelling to Washington DC via United airlines. She checked in by 9pm. By 3am at midnight, she narrated her experience to me. I’m glad she didn’t sustain any major injury.
According to her, the plane lost balance at Cote’d’ivore airspace and kept descending at full force.
She’s so traumatized right now and can’t even travel despite the airline rescheduling her trip till tomorrow evening. She’s already booking another airline to Dc. May God help us

I believer they initially wanted to divert to Accra but felt confident enough after reassessing the situation to navigate to Lagos after declaring an emergency.

Where they choose to land depends among other things on the flight level they were when they regained control and their assessment of the situation for instance they may have been too heavy (Fuel) to land in Accra so they may have made a calculated decision that it’s better to go to Lagos and ditch fuel along the way.

You are right though about the “loss of tools”, my comment was based on the write up and I should have known better not to take Nigerian journalism at face value.

U leave airline wen u go blame, dey blame Nigeria for the fault of the aircraft...
While the aircraft was enroute to Nigeria, the proper thing to do was for the airline management services to have all emergency services ready and waiting.....
Fire services, security, emergency health services, hazmat and all of that....

Instead they had to wait until the plane landed and now you're foolishly blaming Nigeria for whathuh

All these idiots will always look for every means possible to abuse Nigeria...
Some of our useless leaders have done alot of damage to Nigeria but the most damage done is from we the masses....
Quit talking nonsense, please. When has Nigeria ever gotten anything right?.
Lagos control was definitely made aware of the situation. Who navigated the aircraft back to its departure airport in Lagos?.
It was their duty to prepare to receive the plane and its passengers before their arrival. Nigeria is rightly to blame for the lack of requisite emergency services to the traumatized and wounded passengers.

The usual panic modes and loud screams of "blo**d of Jezuz" in a "violent air turbulence" from some over religious passengers. I've been in a few of those kinds of situations in the past while on international flights and it's usually the same kind of reactions. I encountered one such violent air turbulence years back which lasted for over one minute with the lights completely going off leaving us in total darkness while the widebody Airbus A310 I was in was flying over the Atlantic Ocean after leaving the Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire airspace. It's uncanny that almost the same kind of situation happened to this United Airlines flight (which was headed for Washington, D.C., in the United States with 245 passengers) around the Abidjan airspace.

I'm glad it wasn't a "wind shear" like the one that knocked out the ill-fated Bellview Airlines over Ogun State which nosedived right into the ground on impact. Nice they made it back to base.

And I am asking you now... There are different airlines that uses that airport...
What will be wrong if the airline management do the needful and make the necessary preparations in readiness for the landing of the plane??

You're displaying your obvious ignorance regarding the chain of responsibility in air transport management. Again, airport management is responsible for providing first responder services in emergencies such as the one in discussion. The airline is responsible for accommodating, feeding, providing health services, compensating, etc. We are told the passengers are being housed at a nearby hotel, and we can safely assume United is paying for this and other services.

Is an airline, and one which is foreign to bring ambulances, doctors, fire engines etc., with them. My brother, it pays to keep mute than open one's mouth to expose his or her level of ignorance.

People like u go get phone... Instead of you to be smart with it... U will watch porn and gamble your lives away....

No one said an airline should bring fire services from abroad....

It's their responsibility to have a dedicated department responsible for emergencies....

They can have their own fire trucks, ambulances, etc which will be on hand to handle any emergencies that emerge... I fear for your children Sha... How u Wan take teach them anything??

Why do companies like chevron have fire stations in their facilities?? Why do they have first aid boxes and all of that??
Why do some companies even have dedicated hospitals that treat their staffs in the event of an emergency??

The airline is supposed to make provisions for emergency services...

Now they are depending on the same resources meant for the general public...

Try get sense... E go help...

And people like you will die in ignorance. Stop bothering AI about things you should know if you paid attention during your obviously limited academic education. I know Nigeria limits some of you in your ability to learn, but this is not about Nigeria, this is about one unrepentant ignorant individual, you.

There are various items in airport charges that every traveler pays when they buy an airline ticket. These are the services that are paid for by every traveler and therefore have to be provided by the airport management which also charged these fees for the services. Airport operator is not an airline, in this case, it is Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).

Airport charges and taxes make up the bulk of the cost of air travel, not what the airlines take home. But I do not expect an ignorant person to know these things, and that defines you. Thank me for enriching your knowledge. Ode cheesy

..

A fool will always be a fool and nothing else...
All I know is that airline operators have a responsibility to make provisions for emergency situations...
They have a responsibility to have emergency fire fighting equipments and medical services..
Some of them even employ the services of undercover security agents to board their flights to control hostage situations if it ever emerges on board... I wonder how fools like u will raise children....

U are asking me to stop bothering Ai whereas even the phone you hold is smarter than you.....

Right From when the pilot declared an emergency onboard, the flight company will contact the emergency services in the area where the aircraft will make an emergency landing and if it's in an operational base, then they mobilize their own services to control the situation when the plane lands... How difficult is it to educate foolz like you sef... Tufia...

You are not talking to na aviation novice oo..I feed off this field please , most planes use digital cluster now , you won't see any that use analogue especially on international flight..of a turbulence happens and passengers get injured the have to make an emergency landing ASAP ....there is no scenario where the will lose flight controls and the passengers will get injured .. the only thing that will make you lose flight controls on 787 is if you lose engine power or hydraulics and even at that you will extend your emergency turbine and continue flight controls and avionics
can a plane fly into space
