South-east Contributed N101.09bn — Received N341.45bn From VAT Pool In 2024 by FreeStuffsNG(op): 3:49pm On Jan 26, 2025
The five Southeastern states in Nigeria collectively contributed N101.09 billion to the country’s Value Added Tax (VAT) pool in 2024 and received a staggering share of N341.45 billion in return.

According to data compiled by Agora Policy, a Nigerian think tank committed to finding practical solutions to national challenges, Lagos contributed 54% of the total non-import VAT, while 33 states collectively accounted for 19%.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) were responsible for VAT collections during the year.

Out of the N6.72 trillion total VAT generated, FIRS collected N5.13 trillion, accounting for 76.3% of the pool, while NCS contributed N1.59 trillion, representing 23.7%.

Official figures revealed that VAT revenue for 2024 increased by 85%, rising from N3.64 trillion in 2023 to N6.72 trillion.

While the Southeastern states contributed relatively little to the VAT pool, the region received approximately 3.38 times their contributions.

Below is a breakdown of VAT contributions and allocations for the South-East states in 2024:

1. Anambra
Contributed: N47.53bn

Allocated: N78.00bn

2. Ebonyi

While the Southeastern states contributed relatively little to the VAT pool, the region received approximately 3.38 times their contributions.

Same Ebonyi they mock that it's village and has no Aba has proven to be 3 times more VAT-able than Abia, Enugu and Imo.
Smh.

Humility pays in this life because pride goes before disgrace.

As Nigeria is currently structured, I will urge South east states to stop declaring their VAT, hide and use it to develop the region, but collect as much as you can from the centre grin

It's not only them that knows the trick of mining our oil and gas and giving us peanuts in the name of allocations.

If you are not happy, let's do regional governments or full state autonomy.

Am sick and tired of people from parasitic states opening useless threads like this one to mock those feeding them.

Good reason Nigeria needs restructuring. Let SE receive the VAT on imports at Ontsha head bridge and stop paying at Lagos Port, we want to check something. Then, they can also deduct the input from same collections.

Right now, while Lagos collect VAT output from imports, SE deduct input VAT from local output for VAT that was collected at Lagos port. That is robbing Paul and leaving Peter buoyant.

It's a crying shame that Lagos couldn't generate at least 180 trillion dollars from our ports and all our company headquarters stationed there. I think there is heavy fraud going on there. They must be hiding some revenue.

Oyo is being heavily over taxed
Oyo paid ₦272.41 billion in VAT

Entire SE paid N101.10 Billion in VAT

It is not fair

Oyo deserves Tax Refund and Tax rebates

VAT should be collected at point of consumption not at the hq of companies

The report didn't tell us that MTN, Globacom, Airtel and 9mobile VAT that southeast residents paid were recorded under Lagos

These vultures of babablus and their propaganda!!

VAT record is being recorded wrongly.

The right thing is to record VAT on point of sale.

But currently, VAT is recorded according to headquarters. Which is wrong.
