Dear Jimoh,

Thank you for your feedback. I do not speak Yoruba, and I do not know anyone who speaks it. I speak Lukumi. There is no language or people I know who are called Yoruba. Go to Cuba, Brazil, and other places where slaves were taken to BEFORE British colonialism, and they refer to this our language as Lukumi.

Itsekiri is a dialect of the Lukumi language. In lexis, grammar, structure, and tone, it is very similar to Ilaje and Ondo.

The current Goverbor of Ondo is named Orighomisan, a very typical Itsekiri name. If I speak Itsekiri to you, you will understand me, as long as you are from the Lukumi family of languages.

I be Yoruba but lets be honest sha the slaves from current yoruba land never referred to themselves as Yoruba. The earliest books by oyinbo in 1600-1800s never mentioned Yoruba. It was oyo, Gebu(ijebu), izon, Eboe( igbo), Efik etc 😩

Yorubas have never been known as lukumi

They have been known by Anago (in Benin Republic), Lukumi (from Olukumi), Aku people (from Aku Aro, Aku Osan, Aku ale), Yoruba, Ana in Togo (their language is called ife) e.t.c

Infact, those that migrated to the delta area 100 of years ago are still referred to as Olukumi.

Yorubas have never collectively being called any other name apart from Yoruba.
The people used to be called by the town or region they originate from.

Outsiders collectively called all Yorubas Olukumi
But among Yorubas themselves they considered Olukumi to be a Yoruba dialect just like Oyo and Ekiti

Even today in Cuba all Yorubas are called Olukumi and that includes Oyo and Ketu(Benin Republic) descended Yorubas
