Police Refute Sowore’s Claims On IGP Egbetokun’s Tenure by Godspowerpro(op): 5:27am On Jan 31, 2025
• Appointment is Legal, Duly Confirmed by Police Council

The Nigeria Police Force hereby refutes, in clear and unequivocal terms, the baseless and misleading claims recently attributed to Mr. Omoyele Sowore alleging that the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, is illegal. Such claims are entirely unfounded and seek to undermine the legitimacy of the IGP’s appointment as well as public confidence in the Nigeria Police, National Association of Online Security News Publishers, NAOSNP can report.

IGP Egbetokun’s appointment is firmly grounded in law, specifically PART III, Section 7 (6) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended). This provision explicitly states that “The person appointed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police shall hold office for four years.” Moreover, his appointment was duly ratified by the Police Council, and he has received the requisite confirmation letter from the Presidency, validating his tenure from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027, in line with the provisions of Section 8A of the executive bill passed which amended the Police Act, clearly stating that “Any person appointed to the office of Inspector-General of Police shall remain in office until the end of term stipulated in the letter of appointment in line with the provisions of section 7(6) of this Act.

The amendment aims to provide stability and continuity in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, enabling the IGP to implement long-term plans and policies without fear of abrupt termination. This change is expected to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the police force in maintaining law and order in the country.

It is crucial for members of the public to be aware that IGP Egbetokun’s status as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police is both legally and procedurally sound.

The Nigeria Police Force views Mr. Sowore’s unfounded assertions as an attempt to erode public trust and foster confusion regarding the force’s leadership.

Dissemination of inaccurate information, particularly about the IGP’s standing, has the potential to compromise the security framework of our nation and impede our collective efforts to ensure peace and order.

The Nigeria Police hereby cautions individuals and groups against perpetuating such unfounded narratives that can mislead the public and jeopardize national security. We urge all citizens to focus on objective discussions that advance our shared mission of safeguarding lives and property, rather than indulging in disinformation that may undermine the significant strides we continue to make in maintaining public safety.

They amended the Police Act just as the current IG's tenure was about to end, in order to extend it to a four-year term.

However, because the amendment was hurriedly done, they overlooked the fact that the revised Police Act contradicts the Service Act’s provision, which mandates that public servants must retire after 35 years of service or at 60 years of age, whichever comes first.

As Sowore said, Olumuyiwa Adejobi shouldn't be seen anywhere near serious business except in the palace where he is a jester.

Former New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has been sentenced to 11 years in prison, following his conviction on bribery and corruption charges.

Last July, a jury found Menendez guilty on 16 counts for accepting gifts, including gold bars, cash and a Mercedes-Benz, in exchange for helping foreign governments.

Prosecutors were seeking at least a 15-year sentence, citing in court documents the "rare gravity" of the ex-senator's crimes.

Lawyers for Menendez, 71, had called for a shorter sentence paired with community service.

"Somewhere along the way, you became, I'm sorry to say, a corrupt politician," US Judge Sidney Stein said before handing down Menendez's sentence, according to CBS News, the BBC's US partner.

They quickly amended the Police Act just in time to extend the current IGP’s tenure to four years—convenient, right? Now they’re acting like it was always the plan. If everything was legal and transparent, why the last-minute adjustment? This country loves bending rules for the people in power while pretending it's all for stability and efficiency.

What Sawore is saying is this;
as the supreme law of Nigeria, the Constitution overrides the Police Act.
Since the appointment of the Inspector General of Police does not align with constitutional provisions, his position is illegitimate.
The police should stop trying to convince anyone on the illegality, the IG should vacate the seat.

They carefully did not talk about his age or years of service.
We should build strong institutions not strong men.
When Lagbaja died, Nigeria Military did not shut down, institutions must continue to function even if the leaders retire, sacked or moved to the other side.
We should stop defending nonsense.

Some people here pretend not to be born when certain military generals at the point of retirement were appointed as service chiefs during the past regime, and the same still served for over 5 years (exceeding one term of 4 years), before they were changed.
Where were these people when a certain retired ARMY colonel (born 15 January 1955) was brought back from retirement at age 60 years, and made comptroller general of Nigerian CUSTOMS for 8 years (from 2015 to 2023) ?
It is interesting how people choose to always forget stuff, especially when it's coming from the man they love to hate.

So if as you say, illegality was done few years ago, since it is now different person in power which some nigerians love to hate(using your words), the alleged illegality should be given a pass to continue?
