MURIC urges IGP to prevent violence against South West Muslims

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has raised an alarm over what it called increasing threats of violence against Muslims in the South West region of Nigeria, particularly Yoruba Muslims.

The group has called on the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Security (DSS), and other security agencies to act swiftly to prevent further escalation of these threats.

In a press release issued on Friday, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of MURIC, mentioned the growing tension in the region due to ongoing debates and discussions surrounding Shari’ah law.

Akintola expressed concern over a series of threats targeting Yoruba Muslims and their leaders, which have been spreading via social media and other platforms.

“We are constrained to call the attention of the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and other security agencies to stop the plot to unleash violence on South West Muslims.

“The plot thickens daily as new threats are issued by different Yoruba groups,” Akintola said in the statement.


He explained that one of the most recent threats came from a man named Ahmed Saliu Olokoju, who identified himself as the Secretary General of the Yoruba Islamic Salvation Front (YOISF), a group previously unknown.

In a statement titled ‘Shariah in Yorubaland: The Fulani Grand Plot to Destroy Yorubaland’, Olokoju accused Yoruba Muslims supporting Shari’ah of being “Fulani agents,” an allegation Akintola condemned as baseless and inflammatory.

He added that Olokoju’s statement contained direct threats to those advocating for Shari’ah law, warning of a “holy war” against them.

Sharia law is a relic of the past that has no place in a modern and progressive society like Yorubaland. It is a system that promotes backwardness, undermines justice, and stifles cultural and societal development. Historically, the Yoruba people have thrived on their Omoluabi ethos—values of integrity, progressiveness, and respect for humanity. Sharia law contradicts these principles and threatens the foundation of our heritage.

The government must take a firm stand against individuals or groups advocating for the imposition of Sharia law in Yorubaland. It is crucial to investigate and monitor clerics who push this agenda, as many of them are likely influenced by external forces seeking to destabilize our region. These individuals should be held accountable, and where necessary, prosecuted, as their actions endanger the unity and progress of our people.

Clerics championing Sharia law should focus on meaningful contributions to society rather than exploiting religion as a means to manipulate and scam the vulnerable. Yorubaland has always been a beacon of innovation, education, and cultural pride, and we must not allow regressive ideologies to erode the progress built by our ancestors. Those who insist on practicing Sharia law are encouraged to relocate to regions or countries where it is already established, rather than impose it on communities that reject it.

The example of northern Nigeria, where Sharia law is practiced, provides a clear warning. Despite its implementation, the region has not recorded any significant progress attributable to the law. Instead, it has created a system of inequality, where the poor and vulnerable are oppressed while the powerful and corrupt evade justice. No northern governor or political elite has ever faced Sharia's full weight, exposing its inherent flaws and hypocrisy.

Yorubaland must stand united against the infiltration of these regressive ideologies. We must protect our cultural heritage, foster progress, and ensure that the Omoluabi values remain the guiding principles of our society. The future of Yorubaland lies in education, inclusivity, and innovation—not in the adoption of archaic laws that have repeatedly failed to deliver justice or development.

Nigeria is a secular state...if we cannot keep it at that, let everyone go their separate ways. Let the North be like Afghanistan. You cannot encroach people's territory using religion. The wealth th nation enjoy is the south where Christians are dominant. Give Fulani people no space,not even in the name of religion. Look out how they have subdued the Hausas in their land? Are there no Hausa person capable of becoming governor or president in Nigeria? But the Fulani won't allow it .

The religion you're currently claiming is the religion of your parents, if you were born into a different family of another religion (say Hinduism), that is the exact religion you will practice.

You were born without a religion in you, your factory reset has no religion in it. If you were to be a phone and they do factory reset on you today being a phone, there will not be anything found related to religion in your settings, files and file systems anymore; you learn religion only after your birth growing up.


Islam is idolatry and paganism, Christianity aswell is idolatry - All the world religion is idolatry, including all the Abrahamic religion. It is because Allah has been an idol worshiped by paganists before the Prophet received his revelations.

All Abrahamic religion are idolatory, they only package them well and condemn your heritage as evil, whereas, Nigeria was better in terms of morality, honesty and integrity before they brought the foreign religions.

In peace loving, emotional intelligence, love for neighbor, respect for sanctity of life, we are even better than those who brought those religion with primitive leaders and prophets whose morality and characters are highly questionable.
