Have you traveled to countries like Canada, Uk, Germany? If you don't pass a strict road test, you can't get a drivers license. I drove over 10yrs before going to Canada yet passed the driving test after 3 attempts.

Secondly, as a truck driver, its illegal to drive more than 8hrs in a day. You must take rest break and check in at intervals. There are also brake checks so those frequent brake failures for trucks in Nigeria can be avoided with strong regulations

Who checks if drivers are licensed? Who checks whether they're driving under the influence of alcohol? Who checks if their cars are regularly serviced? Why is there no speed limit in Nigeria?
Softmirror:
It is mostly individual irresponsibility that causes most of this accidents.

STOP AND TEST DRIVERS FOR ALCOHOL AT RANDOM.
Road Safety Commission workers need to carry alcohol test kits with them to stop and test drivers for alcohol beverages while on the road.

One of the buses drove against traffic.

In Lagos, when a bus was driving against traffic was impounded, some unfortunate idiots were insulting the Lagos state government. It is things like this they were trying to prevent.

Problem is this is Nigeria where grabbing apex political leadership for the interest of one's ethnic group is the focus of apex political leaders.

Western countries didn’t go to the moon to pick up measures to safeguard their citizens.

Possible causes of this accident:
Over speeding
Being under the influence of drugs
Fatigue
Distraction

It's quite obvious that the two buses filled with passengers are from transport companies!
If we had proactive road and safety agencies, the two transport companies that have these reckless drivers would be heavily sanctioned with fines and suspension to serve as a deterrent to others!

If airline companies can be sanctioned for not abiding by the required safety laws why should road transport companies not be equally sanctioned for similar offences that have led to the consistent loss of lives on our roads?

Sometimes, the passengers keep quite when drivers are reckless. We should learn to always speak up when these illiterate drivers are being reckless
At that point there's really nothing much you can do, especially when the driver is drunk or refusing to listen to caution. For some self, cautioning him can lead to an argument which might even distract the him further

There was a plane crash just about 2 days ago. Donald Trump's claims was that it was as a result of unqualified employees.

My dear friend, I have first hand experience with Canada and I agree with you about their strictness in ensuring safety. Sincerely speaking, one of our greatest challenges is INDISCIPLINE.

Gbam. Even if the roads are bad, conscious drivers will drive with caution. But here in Nigeria, VIO does not carry yearly checks on vehicles to see what must be repaired on the vehicle before the vehicle is allowed to move on the road or parked in public park. Every akpakara din gwom junk of vehicle moves on the road. It's imprisonment for any mechanic to authorise a vehicle which failed VIO test in functioning countries to be on the road.

Road Safety does not flag down drivers to test for alcohol,

Bro, it unfortunate Nigeria is completely lawless. What you said above will never work in Nigeria, It will only be an avenue for the regulation enforcers to enrich themselves.

The problem is far beyond that, it's a cultural trait very inherent. Be sincere with yourself. The moment the VIO becomes strict in carrying out their duties the same people will start CRYING and saying all sorts of things. It is a two side failure both the government institutions and the the ordinary citizens. More is that we don't value life.
Re: 30 Passengers Burnt To Death In Ondo Car Crash by Justnation: 9:53pm On Feb 02, 2025
When a passenger tell the driver to stop speeding some drivers will be insulting the passenger and shouting at them not teach him how to drive but when disaster like this happens the passengers will suffer for the errors of the drivers.

One thing that baffles me is that some passengers will be encouraging the reckless driver to ride on.

Rip to the dead

You know in Canada, if you're caught driving under the influence of alcohol, your license will be withdrawn. To get it back, you've to take a course that cost CA$1,500, install breathalyzer in your car that prevents the car from starting unless you breathe into it and no alcohol in your breathe and you pay like $4,000 to get your license.

How will you now be careless? Institutions will force you to be disciplined
