Planning to buy some.
Their price depends on the age and size of the bird

Owlumeday:
GMO stands for genetically modified organism.. which means actively altering the genome of an organism by knocking out or adding a new gene that was previously not inherent in the organism. example is the glowing mice. Your explanation points at heterosis and not GMO
We learn every day

Owlumeday:
You do have a great point, apart from the GMO part which i disagree with.. there is nothing genetically modified in noiler. The right term would be genetically improved.
I admit it was a wrong choice of words as nothing could come up to mind in order to drive home the message as at the time of the write up, my bad I must say... but the good thing is that the message was understood clearly

So what I'm actually asking is if free range has any advantages than rearing local chickens in enclosed place? Because free range isn't feasible for me in my area as they keep disturbing my neighbours or get stolen or killed by predators.

Would they gain same weight in free range vs reared in cages?
Free range actually saves you the cost of feeding the birds. However, I acknowledge that it can be challenging where you don't have space and with the spate of hunger in the land, they are susceptible to being stolen.

If you want to keep them for your consumption alone, then I encourage you to put them in a cage. A carpenter can construct a makeshift hen pen for you.

It is nice to see them healthy and growing.
Will get their rooster tomorrow before travelling back to work.
The advantage of having them is that they don't need much care and monitoring. Just feed them in the morning and evening.

That's too expensive for a grower .... How much then will a full grown be?

It's okay if you're in Lagos, Abuja or PH... Any other places will have lesser patronage of this kind

.. this is a Noiler breed not a local rooster. I selected it because it has the features I need in a rooster.. moreso the same size were bought for slaughtering during the ileya festival. It is a big cock but not yet matured for mating

No it's not.

Regardless what OP is attempting to do is pretty much create a GMO of his own, isn't he? undecided

Re: Improved Local Birds Breeds Project by Adedamola19: 4:29am On Jan 31, 2025
I bred local chicken an Cockerel together the results is good but just a young cock out of the flock grows very well at 2 month 15 days
That is the hen that produced the egg , unfortunately she is dead now don't know what happened to it met it dead in the cage without showing sign of sickness
That's the rooster that mate it.
Out of 4 chicks just one mortality
The picture below the first one they are 4 weeks but now 10weeks I think they grow well

I have been doing improved local birds for about 2 years and it's rewarding, I do sell out at 5 months. I have about 37 birds to start selling by Easter period.

Update on my farm work.
The fowls are now laying their first set of eggs, they were mated by 2 Noiler cocks..
The Fulani cock I bought with them was slaughtered and eaten on new year day.

How do the Fulani chickens fare on free range during the rainy season? Year before last I experimented with female local chickens, local turkey and noiler on semi-free range. They were in a fenced area and provided feed. I sold the local chicken eggs while using the local chickens to hatch the noiler eggs and turkey eggs. Initially they were doing well and the noiler birds multiplied from about 10 to 60+ or so. But during the rainy season I lost many birds and got discouraged. Looks like free ranging during the rainy season is challenging for chickens.

Last year I started experimenting with pekin ducks. So far It seems they don't have problem with rainy season. I can't conclude yet since I had just 5, now 4 (1 entered pot). And they lay lots of eggs.

They do fine in rainy season. They are in a fenced area with a shed where they sleep at night or hide when rain is falling.

Please where did you get your Pekin ducks? I rear Muscovy ducks and the younger ones (less than four months) don't fare well under the rain. They haven't developed their waterproof feathers by then. Even the older ones like to take shelter from very heavy rains. Do well to provide some shelter for them.

When they were younger (without the waterproof feathers) I didn't allow them outside their pens. But since after letting them out it was always work to get them back in their pen in the evening. They prefer to stay outdoors and when it rains they are so excited and play about in the rain. You will see them glide in the rain runoff water. They love the rain.

Concerning the source I will need to search here on nairaland again which you can also do.

My noiler chicken had stopped growing for about 2 weeks now. And they are very light. I noticed a kind of boils on some of them.
Please any solution?

Get a coccidiosis drugs that's effective like Embazin forte, deworm them and get good antibiotic that contains Tylosin .
