In Anambra State, Nteje, some parts of Umuleri, and I think Dunukofia. I think in Dunukofia or somewhere in Anambra state, burial ceremony can last for 3 days where people eat and drink for 3 consecutive days.

My friend who's maternal grandma from Nteje died in 2018 aged 98 years was billed 5 cows cos she was the oldest person in the whole of Nteje prior to her death. According to culture, they can't perform burial rites for the man unless his mom's own is fully observed. If they decide to perform rites for both now, they should be looking at 8 cows minimum.

While I agree that there are burials that can go for days or have high demands, most times, it is because the person has a Chieftaincy title they collected.

Maybe I am wrong, but I don't think there's a village that will require a minimum of 3 cows from anybody in the name of culture before you get married. It means that farmers there no go die or be get buried.

Are you really sure about the bolded? In some towns, culture demands that you bury well aged parents with minimum of 3 cows! with some goats to go along with it. Many groups are given what they request which run into hundreds of thousands. If you fail to fulfill any of those obligations, the burial will not be recognized by the village.

We were forced to spend 1.5M to bury my grandma and when this money is adjusted for inflation, it is easy 6 to 7M.

Not necessarily titled but well aged. For example, the death of oldest within an age grade in the community attracts such. They believe that such people have had middle aged children and matured grandchildren. So everyone comes together to make the burial happen.

When my grandma died, we killed a cow for the community and another for her home community. Na the normal rite be that.

If a retired civil servant dies, and his children are just finishing NYSC or just getting jobs, will they mandate them to do this? na people wey get money care about what an expensive culture says

Organize church service, get the church cemetery to bury the dead, share pre packaged jollof rice take away at church premises, everyone head back to your home base to continue your struggle

Like I said, the dead one must be well aged, that means, his grandchildren should be the one finishing NYSC. That church people you want to organize won't even come if the dead one had some unpaid dues with the church except you decide to clear them. If they eventually come, keep 3 big cooler of rice with enough meat and at least 5 cartons of malt. Even after all these, the community doesn't recognize it.

If you want to take a Chieftaincy title, you have to bury your dead properly. Before you can bury another dead, you have to bury the first who died. Everything keeps stacking up and there's risk of serious social stigma. And if you have any self respect left, you better not raise any form of opinion during a village meeting.
