Chairman Of Ondo State Radio Station, Breeze FM Brutalises Female Staff For Tendering Resignation Letter

Tokunbo allegedly withdrew his shoe and struck the lady in the head before unleashing a barrage of blows on her

Mr Tokunbo Opebi, the acting chairman of an Akure-based radio station Breeze 91.9 FM, has been accused of beating and assaulting a former member of staff of the station Mercy Okafor for tendering his resignation letter.

It was learnt that the incident which took place on Tuesday at the premises of the station located along Ijoka Road in Akure has further exposed the abusive nature of some media owners in Nigeria.

Source privy to the incident mentioned that Okafor joined the station as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) corps member but was offered employment by the station after she completed her service.

Mercy Okafor is a bundle of talent. She is Igbo but she has a Bachelor’s degree in Yoruba language. I heard her mum is from Ile-Ife; her versatility and her command of Yoruba Language attracted people to her. They begged her to stay after her service.” the source said.

According to the source, when the station's accountant, Bisola Agbayewa, gave birth and went on maternity leave, Okafor was asked to fill in for her, which she did admirably.

When the leave expired, the accountant did not return and instead resigned, so Okafor became both an accountant and an OAP at the station.

"Breeze 91.9 FM has the worst payment package of any radio station in Akure, Ondo State's capital," the source claimed.

Up to 2024, some OAP earn as little as 25,000 Naira per month, while temporary workers are paid as little as 10,000 Naira, in direct violation of Nigerian labour rules and the Minimum Wage Act.

These payments are not made on time or as scheduled. According to a credible source, some of the workers had not received full payment for the month of December as of February 5th, 2025.

According to the source, Okafor submitted her resignation letter and notified the station's management of her plan to leave the organisation. When she finally turned in the company's data, all hell broke loose.

The chairman reportedly told her she should have stayed until the station found a replacement, but she told him she had already given the station notice, which they had ignored.

Infuriated by her courage, Tokunbo allegedly withdrew his shoe and struck the lady in the head before unleashing a barrage of blows on her.

“It took the Intervention of Bimpa Dele-Mogaji and Joyin Johnson to free Okafor from the hands of Tokunbo who was throwing punches at the young lady,” the source said.

“Tokunbo is responsible for almost all the woes that have happened to that station. If you stay you won’t get paid regularly, if you leave you might get arrested on trumped up allegations. Who has he not arrested and detained, from former engineer to marketer to OAP?" he lamented.

“If you honourably tendered your resignation letter before the end of the month you will never get the salary for that month or any other outstanding pay."

Mercy Ekene Okafor who is the victim of the recent physical assault has reportedly received treatments for internal injuries sustained from the assault.

Her mother and some relatives came to Akure on Thursday to take her home to Ile-Ife for treatment.

No allegation of financial misappropriation was brought against her, Tokunbo simply said he beat her up like that because he didn’t like the tone with which she responded to him," the source said.

Attempts made to reach the general manager of the station Sunday Ajongbolo and the acting chairman were unsuccessful.

Most private corporate organizations are modern day slave plantation.

For that sum they pay they want to take over your life and drain the last drop of blood in you.

I was in a firm when I first moved to the city,

Poor pay but I had to accept as I needed to find my feet.

As time went on I started having opportunities to do private gigs from time to time.

One time I went for a brief at efcc towards closing hours.

This my boss is barely in the office, he comes in that day and nearly blew up my phone with countless calls but I couldn't see it as I had submitted my phone at the efcc gate. So upon coming out, I quickly returned the call to find out what the emergency was only for him to tell me that he came into the office and didn't see me reason he was calling, he didn't need me for anything specific that was the day i started making concrete plans for my exit from the firm.

Oh, another incident, after about a year and some months of working with the firm, principal comes in one day that we need to start having morning devotion and prayers before work starts for the day, this is someone that's barely in the office,I got irked because at my point of employment, I was employed for the role of an associate and not a prayer warrior so I refused to join the other ladies.

They went ahead to report to the boss who called me to query my actions and I plainly told him it was against my principle and he would not raise the issue anymore.

Fast forward to the next year or so after the overzealous girls had grown tired of the whole prayer shenanigans and had fallen apart with the boss for different reasons, i get to find out that they didnt even like the idea of the morning prayers yet would report my refusal to join.

Bottom line, most Nigerian employers know the sycophant nature of most employee and would exploit it to the maximum it left for you to stand up for yourself even you may stand the risk of being fired but then, its something that's bound to happen anyway so stop taking BS from employers.

Those founders or directors of business that find it difficult to recruit staff are the worst of humans. They use their employees, harass, humiliate and even degrade them as they please. The situation of the country is a major factor that aids them.

That staff must have been very resourceful

Picture or video or any sort of evidence. I don't rush to conclusion based only on one side of a story.
See the commenters above me jumping to conclusion, that is why it is so easy to control you guys in this country. They will kill person and quickly put out a narrative that the person committed suicide or died ontop woman, and y'all will lap it up and start commenting your stale jokes and motivational quotes.
Never seen a more vacuous population.

I need faces to go with the names. People from that region are disgracing the nation once again. How are these animals my fellow citizens? Which spirit did I offend to be born in this country?

Very good.

Merch Okafor should get her brothers, they should storm the personal house of the coward and beat him mercilessly until he stops breathing. Then they should take his breathless body to the Radio station and revive him there so that all Staff will see that he has been disgraced.

Especially private schools owners; is like there's an occultic forum that naturally turns them to weak-ed people once they open even a one bedroom nursery school

Before some fools add ethnic colouration to this, read the above.

She speaks sane language as the owner of the station, so we can say she's from the same tribe as the person that brutalised her.

This is a case of assault and battery, the man that did this should be arrested and jailed for a long time. He's an animal. He should go beat male inmates at the prison

So finally finally Breeze FM has collapsed, the many of thier OAPs were living in droves in 2019 I knew something was wrong with that station. No be by force to continue broadcast, social media has dwarfed the activities of radios and TV stations in Nigeria, as a person, I can't remember when last I listened to radio, even TV self, apart from African magic, and sports channel, who get time for local or international news on TV when I can easily access them in my phone.
