What will happen when the child gets to tertiary institution and doesn't know how to communicate effectively in our Lingua Franca?

What will happen of the child gets a job after sec school without knowing how to communicate in English?

Children should be taught in their mother tongue..... If you have a school with mixed languages, you can use English language but Nigerians should stop using fluent English speaking as measure for intelligence.
It's not hard to tell, you are Yoruba.

So what did Igbo think and wha did Hausa and Fulani think because you opened yourr lousy mouth talking without thinking. Did they said the teaching with local dialect only applicable in SW? So China, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, England, France, Russia etc that use only their mother tongue are you better than them?

This same silly talk that make Saudi imposed their Arabic on their mohammedism followers and never allow other language to teach islam in their language.

Not Yoruba. I am Yoruba and I have a different view. The policy of mother tongue cannot be achieved.
How many books will they review to mother tongue in a country where we have many languages. Though most of these languages can be successfully restricted to the 3 main languages but it will still lead to cheating of identity of the minorities.

It is best we rid ourselves of mother tongue and stick to English from the start
Re: FG Seeks Reversal Of Mother Tongue Policy In Primary Schools by Prince001(m):
wunmi590:
huh

Which stupid reversal is this?

They should stick to the English, when they get home their parent will teach them their mother tongue...

I was just informing my wife last week that should should inform my kids teacher not to allow my kids speak yoruba, and not to also allow the other kids speak it in class..

When they get home, they should speak it, English should be a solid foundation when they are growing up, so that it won't be difficult for them when they have finally grown up
na woww oo. See mentality of an African man thinking less about himself. In Germany, language of study is German, in france is french , in Switzerland German region is German, french region is french while Italian region is Italian. lets elevate and be proud of our native language and stop this colonial mentalty mindset plsssss!!!!

The problem is when people in power shift the standards to fit into their weakness.

As far as it is a Hausa person as the minister of education, instead of them working on making the system better, they will focus on bringing down the system to make sure their people's weakness becomes insignificant.

You make your traditional language a medium of instruction if the language is developed enough to fit into reality or if it is flexible enough to fit.

Now, translate these for me in Hausa, Igbo, or Yoruba:

1. Mitochondria
2. Mechanics
3. Atom
4. Differentiation

Major languages like Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc. are struggling hard, spending much to learn English, but Nigeria is trying hard to reducce their level of English to meet the level of English Hausa people speak.

Calm down!
None if these words you listed originated from English language. They are derived from Greek and Latin
What makes you believe Hausa cannot derived its equivalents from the same origin?

introduce mother tongue as a subject not using it as the basics language, children aut to be speaking different languages
English plus mother tongue should go hands to hands

What were they doing when ngos were hyping and promoting that nonsense...sleeping as usual and not thinking ahead.

Our ability to speak fluent English places us at an advantage ahead of many Asian countries and others to compete for offers on the global stage

If they like they should relegate that advantage and make English a super costly skill to aquire like in Korea

It is still the same poor and their children they strive to protect that will suffer.not all policies in in our interest long term,we should raise global citizens, promoting bilinguism is different from promoting mother tongue teaching primarily....

If you people don't mention Yoruba una lives can never be the same. You and your foolish comment! Bloody tribalist! Don't you have your own language? Did anybody says you cannot use it. People like you are slaves and will remain slaves to another person language. To show your low IQ you just jumped into conclusions that the person is Yoruba. Kids on Nairaland!
You are disgusting!

English is our lingua franca so all these attempts to make one speak his native language or mother tongue mostly because of tribal bigotry won't help the country.

No representative of Nigeria that goes out of our shores will speak their native language while representing Nigeria internationally. It won’t be accepted because we have over 500 languages.

After more than 60 years we suddenly remember we have mother tongue?? Orisirisi. undecided

Musicwriter, what do you have to say about this?
The post actually said it's a reversal, which means it was cancelled instead. We all have been enslaved with European languages in Africa, so I don't expect anything else from slaves.

The complexities they cited as reason for cancelling the policy can easily be solved by running a regional government. There are other solutions even within current Nigeria. But, again, slaves can't think
