What will happen when the child gets to tertiary institution and doesn't know how to communicate effectively in our Lingua Franca? What will happen of the child gets a job after sec school without knowing how to communicate in English? |

Ruke1989:So what did Igbo think and wha did Hausa and Fulani think because you opened yourr lousy mouth talking without thinking. Did they said the teaching with local dialect only applicable in SW? So China, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, England, France, Russia etc that use only their mother tongue are you better than them? This same silly talk that make Saudi imposed their Arabic on their mohammedism followers and never allow other language to teach islam in their language. |

Ruke1989:Not Yoruba. I am Yoruba and I have a different view. The policy of mother tongue cannot be achieved. How many books will they review to mother tongue in a country where we have many languages. Though most of these languages can be successfully restricted to the 3 main languages but it will still lead to cheating of identity of the minorities. It is best we rid ourselves of mother tongue and stick to English from the start |

Nwaikpe:Calm down! None if these words you listed originated from English language. They are derived from Greek and Latin What makes you believe Hausa cannot derived its equivalents from the same origin? |

What were they doing when ngos were hyping and promoting that nonsense...sleeping as usual and not thinking ahead. Our ability to speak fluent English places us at an advantage ahead of many Asian countries and others to compete for offers on the global stage If they like they should relegate that advantage and make English a super costly skill to aquire like in Korea It is still the same poor and their children they strive to protect that will suffer.not all policies in in our interest long term,we should raise global citizens, promoting bilinguism is different from promoting mother tongue teaching primarily.... |

Ruke1989:If you people don't mention Yoruba una lives can never be the same. You and your foolish comment! Bloody tribalist! Don't you have your own language? Did anybody says you cannot use it. People like you are slaves and will remain slaves to another person language. To show your low IQ you just jumped into conclusions that the person is Yoruba. Kids on Nairaland! You are disgusting! |
| Re: FG Seeks Reversal Of Mother Tongue Policy In Primary Schools by jaxxy(m): 2:49pm On Feb 10, 2025 |
Aonkuuse:English is our lingua franca so all these attempts to make one speak his native language or mother tongue mostly because of tribal bigotry won't help the country. No representative of Nigeria that goes out of our shores will speak their native language while representing Nigeria internationally. It won’t be accepted because we have over 500 languages. After more than 60 years we suddenly remember we have mother tongue?? Orisirisi. ![]() |

joseph1832:The post actually said it's a reversal, which means it was cancelled instead. We all have been enslaved with European languages in Africa, so I don't expect anything else from slaves. The complexities they cited as reason for cancelling the policy can easily be solved by running a regional government. There are other solutions even within current Nigeria. But, again, slaves can't think |
